Story behind the song
I was asked to cover this after a friend heard my laid back guitar version of this song. I love the song so why not record it ! another bucketlist song done !It was difficult to get the vibe and i've done a more live version . Don Henley is a great singer so hope I've done it justice ! The song is about nostalgia and summer love and past relationships and the loss of youth . For those interested I used a Fender telecaster through a Blackstar studio 10 6L 6 for guitar parts including the seagull like sounds in the musical interlude in the middle of the song and a Yamaha PSR E473 for all synth parts and a squier bass guitar .
Lyrics
Nobody on the road Nobody on the beach I feel it in the air The summer's out of reach Empty lake, empty streets The sun goes down alone I'm driving by your house Though I know you're not home I can see you Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got your hair combed back Sunglasses on, Baby I can tell you My love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone I never will forget those nights I wonder if it was a dream Remember how you made me crazy? Remember how I made you scream ? I don't understand what happened to our love Babe i'm gonna get you back Gonna show you what I'm made of I can see you Your brown skin shinin' in the sun I see you walkin' real slow, smilin' at everyone I can tell you My love for you will still be strong Ater the boys of summer have gone musical break Out on the road today I saw a Deadhead sticker on a cadillac A little voice inside my head said " Don't look back , you can never look back " I thought I knew what love was What did I know ? Those days are gone forever I should just let 'em go but I can see you Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got your top pulled down Radio on ,Baby I can tell you My love for you will still be strong Ater the boys of summer have gone I can see you Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got your hair slicked back Wayfarers on , Baby I can tell you My love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone Outro

I hvaen't heard this song in ages, but I have to go and listen to the original again. Listening to your version, makes me realize that this really is a great song. I am very amazed at the production and how you manage to create this amazing soundscape, at times disturbing and at other times so reassuring. Great work!

Fabulous job on a great song - the best song Tom Petty never wrote hehe - again you’ve captured the true vibe of the song and the vocals and guitars are perfect!

I've always liked this song. This is a very nice cover. Everything sounds perfect. Awesome production and sound quality. The guitars are excellent. Am I right in thinking that Mike Campbell from Tom Petty's band played on the original. A really great recording Steve. Such attention to audio detail. :)

Excellent on every level! I admire your meticulous attention to detail when covering songs & you definitely have an ear for all the subtle aspects of each song. Brilliant vocals & technique, fantastic work on the guitar & synth. First claas production & mix. Outstanding stuff!

Very hard vocals to take on. Performance and production are stellar. Great cover. I wore this album out back in the day and baseball is my favorite sport spent many years playing and I still watch it everyday. Kudos. I’ve heard your accoustic version before. Super.

First to comment. You more than did the song justice Steve. Everything from the laid back guitar work to the vocals with conviction is top notch. I added it to my Covers of the Click station.
