Artist picture
Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
Pure, unapologetic prog rock as it should be progged - 11 minutes devoted to the joys of, er, gardening? Yeah well I like gardening, so with an affectionate nod to Yes and other giants of their age I thought I'd let it rip. Now where did I leave that dibber?
Lyrics
At the lawn's edge Dig down with a straight blade Biting crunch of soil on spade Winter's over Take off your glove Feel the root below and shoot above An earthy dirty-fingered loved Culling clover And here between the blues and reds In the riot of chaotic bedding And the million things that need deadheading In the warmth of summer scents Names of loved ones Carved into an oaken bench We can be seen in between nodding flowerheads Close to the hedge Seasons change But the shapes we make remain We pray for sun and rain In proper measure We are not masters here Based on all we know We merely try to guide as best we can Tend our tenderlings And plan and take pleasure In the way things turn Frost and bitter cold All is colourless and death But something silently draws breath Beneath the surface Don't be deceived Nothing's ever still And even in the lightless chill Shoots pierce the earth But soon between the blues and reds In the riot of chaotic bedding And the million things that need deadheading In the warmth of summer scents Names of loved ones Carved into an oaken bench We will be seen in between nodding flowerheads Close to the hedge Close to the hedge Close to the hedge

This is excellent. Reminds me of a Floyd track. I love the abstract nature of the lyrics. You are a very creative musician. Now the nylon string comes in. Love it

Wow ! Steve you’re a ‘kin genius ! They don’t write em like that anymore ! Blown away by this ! It’s hard enough to write a song about gardening but in a prog rock genre keeping the listener interested ? Get out of here ! God damn genius ! I’m gonna take up gardening .Very yes and ELP esque . Fantastic use of instrumentation , twists and turns expertly played and I love the outro ! I know what it’s like to record long tracks it’s a nightmare ! You will find dire straits tracks on my page which telegraph road is 14 minutes . Brothers in arms 9 mins and tunnel of love . Check them out when you get chance but I’ve not had to come up with original ideas like you have I’m in awe ! 👏👏
