I was trying out some different tunings and I came up with: E,A,D,G,Bb,D (low to high). With this, I could play some really nice sounding chords and arpeggios in G-Minor. I started singing "I miss you, Jimmy" and the rest came quickly.

New band name for my one man band. The ancient form of my first name.
My name is Holger Luth. I was about 15 years old, when I got my first guitar. Actually it belonged to an older friend, but the never played it, so he let me borrow it. I had been taking piano lessons earlier, but I hated it. The most fun I had with the piano, was to create my own little tunes. i was no good at repetitive rehearsing. It has been the same with my guitar playing. Many of my guitar playing friends, spent hours rehearsing technical stuff. I never had the patience for that, I just did what I thought sounded right. My mind was more directed towards songwriting, than towards being the guitar hero, though I did like to play neverending live solos, long enough to make the bass player make puking sounds and the drummer start throwing sticks at me... I played in both small and larger bands with up to 8-9 people, with violins, flutes and lots of other instruments, but I think my best time in a band, was playing in a three piece. It was in the aftermath of Police, British New Wave, the Danish Punk scene, Danish songwriters like C.V. Jorgensen and many more. You had to invent a lot of new "big" chords, in order to create a bigger sound, being the only guitarist ( and lead singer). Later I started listening a lot to bands like U2, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and most of all Peter Gabriel. Peter is like my guiding star. I have had the luck of seeing him in concert a couple of times in the recent years and even if he has gained a few pounds and is called "Papa Bear" by his bass player, he can still sing better than anyone I know. His voice is directly wired to his heart, it's like every word has its' own set of wings and flies out of his mouth, carrying an important message. Wish I could get anywhere near that! My musical taste has developed over the years and I try out a lot of different genres, out of curiosity and because I get inspired by other musicians, here on SC and by other friends in music. I have 3 sons, that are all engaged in music somehow and they have also inspired me a lot. They have a totally different take on the term "Musician", than I have and I find it inspiring and I am amazed at the multifaceted way they can tackle the tasks of a songwriter, producer and musician. I must admit, that my music sounds a little old fashioned compared to music of today, but what the heck.. I am from 1957, I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Kinks, The Who, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Bob Dylan.. need I say more?

Story behind the song
Try saying the title of song the title of the song fast a few times. Now you know what key it is in.. I was trying out some different tunings and I came up with: E,A,D,G,Bb,D (low to high). With this, I could play some really nice sounding chords and arpeggios in G-Minor. I did the finger picking acoustic guitar and the electric guitar apeggios and chords, with this tuning. The lyrics cam from, that I out of nowhere started to sing "I miss you Jimmy", to one of the chord sequences, I had come up with. I thought I would give it a twist in the story telling, so the guy that misses Jimmy, used to see him as his worst enemy. They were competitors, but now that he is gone, this guy realizes, that he misses the competition, as it made him work harder and improve his abilities. You could say, that Jimmy was his "best enemy"...
Lyrics
I remember Jimmy, he was one of a kind. Such a great talent, a true perfectionist. He knew every detail, of all the things he learned. It was overwhelming, to compete with him. Jimmy, where did you go? What became of you? Jimmy, did you stay strong? Did you overcome? I used to be number one, until you came along. Suddenly I was nobody and you were the talk of the town. I can still recall the day, when you collapsed. And I didnt even show I was sorry. Soon I realized how you had made me- work harder than I ever did before. I miss you Jimmy! I never thought I would. I miss you Jimmy! Like a friend, I never knew I had.

REally like the sonic character of this one, a well-crafted sound that sets the mood of the song before even taking note of the words. Well done!

Sorry for the slow response my friend. I liked the out of the box feel on this. 60's feel but more progressive with nice harmonies and some cool guitar work. Nice drum programming. Good post Holger. Like that growly rhythm guitar tone too!

I immediately have to think of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" because of the chords you are using at the start. Also the melody is almost the same. A very dynamic start, although. The vocal part breaths the 70s totally for me and your vocals are very touching. At the instrumental part of 2:50 "While my guitar....." is coming back for me. Very good played guitars. Nice song, Holger. I don't think it was your meaning to put "While My Guitar" in it, maybe it's a song that has been put very deep in your unconsciousness. In general I hear very much Beatles influence in your songs. Enjoyed it!

Hej Holger, what a nice song that, as you say, musicians can relate to. I like the slightly overdriven rhythm guitar...and the solos are neat. The double stops are a nice little feature. I had a 'Jimmy' who was actually called Mark. Unfortunately he moved to another town for a promotion and we lost touch. I learned a lot and he brought my guitar playing on quite a lot...where are you Mark?
