OK Irene,
I understand that you are used to high temperatures in general. 16°C average in winter is high for me too (just like 40 in summer.
Maybe your idea about Europe is a bit too negative when you think about temperatures. First of all there is a lot of difference between south (your temperature, no freezing) and the north with a colder climate.
Most of the winters are soft. That means sometimes a period with freezing temperatures less than -10°C at night.
The last really cold winter was around 1986. I know because in the Netherlands they have got a big skate evenement where a lot of skaters pass "11 cities" on nature ice. It's for all people, not only professionals, but therefor the ice has to become thick enough to bear the lots of people joining.
I guess climate change has got a influence. Right now it's about 2°C in the night and 7°C in the day. Not so very cold, but when you compare it with 16........
And in Eastern Europe, near the Russian border, winters are
