Spoken Word

Uncultivated Rabbits provides a space for poets, listeners, artists, soon-to-be artists and poets, MC, and the general passer-by to share, generate, and refine their skills of "spit" (the ability to rhyme or place words together that dictate your opinion about your surroundings, publicly) thus, generating a community. At the University of California, Irvine (UCI), our Spring Quarter creative sessions are held on Mondays 4:00-5:00 PM @ the Cross-Cultural Center, Ring Room. It's beside the main entrance, the room with the huge glass windows, you can't miss it! =). Most importantly, we host Open Mics EVERY FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH to showcase the talents of the student body. This includes, but not limited to, spoken word, poetry, music, singing, beat boxing, emceeing, and many other art forms.
Band/artist history
Uncultivated Rabbits (UR) is the first poetry spoken word organization at UC Irvine, originally founded on March 29th of 2005 by John Nguyen, Caroline Chang, and Nam Ngo. Our mission is to facilitate an emergent student voice by creating a nurturing space where students can express and empower themselves through the written and spoken word.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Uncultivated Rabbits performs throughout the UCI campus, as well as other venues within Orange County, Long Beach, and Los Angeles. Wordsmiths in this organization demonstrate a commitment to bettering themselves and other group members, or even raising the bar within their craft and are tasked with introducing the spoken word art form to new ears and communities.
Your musical influences
Bao Phi, Yellow Rage, Taylor Mali, Shihan, Beau Sia, Poetri, Suheir Hammad, Sekou the Misfit, Saul Williams, Tupac Amaru Shakur, Ani Defranco, Alvin Lau, Roger Bonair-Agard, Steve Connell, Steve Coleman, Isle Park, Denise Uyehara, Ameri Baraka, Langston Hughes, Shakespeare, and all poets past, present, and future.
What equipment do you use?
Mic or no mic. Either way, we have our voices to reverberate our opinions through the spoke word art of performance poetry.
Anything else?
From rooms to stages to venues, Uncultivated Rabbits continues to breed art from the underground to the mainstream. Giving life to words, our art is neither watered-down nor deprived of substance. Instead, we nurture poetry out from the soils of our notebooks to the heights of our dreams, ready to spread its wings from our voices to your ears. Uncultivated Rabbits making more sense than coagulating flowers, welcome to our topsy-turvy world of performance poetry.
