Band/artist history
The Drop Band, New York Citys favorite happy hippies, play their own brand of modern psychedelic rock with a classic rock vibe. The band was founded in 1997 as the house band for Paul Mascott and Hank Wagners critically acclaimed theatre piece Drop and was kept together to make records and perform Mascott and Wagners music. Appearing in combinations ranging from 3 to 12 pieces, electric or acoustic, the band plays a collection of original material from their CDs:
- 1999, the Drop Band released their first commercial recording, Dropout (Squelch Records) and the songs Groovy Bump Melon and The Drug Song from this CD have been licensed to 5 MTV programs including Road Rules and Senseless Acts of Video. Groovy Bump Melon also is featured in the independent film Flophouse and was nominated as Best Modern Rock Song in the Just Plain Folks Music Awards.
- 2000, the band went out on an experimental limb, ditching the traditional idea of drums and replacing them sonically with a kit of hand percussion instruments played with finesse by Joe Mowatt. The Rain Falls Now (Syberdelix Records) is the basis for The Drop Band: Acoustic, a live coffeehouse favorite. The song, Ganja Tree, was licensed by a documentary on the Million Man Marijuana March in California.
- 2001 the band climbed to the next limb of the experimental tree, releasing an EP of mostly instrumental psychedelic metal that developed out of a chance recording session with Paul and drummer John Macaluso (ARK, TNT, Yngwie Malmsteen). This EP Prophets (Syberdelix Records) has provided music to a video featuring Team Xtreme a stunt motorcycle team in FL.
- 2002 The Drop Band released their lastest album, Theres Only Sound to overwhelming critical acclaim. Sound gave the band an internet hit, garnering a nomination for CD of The Year at Kweevak.com, a feature as artist of the month at Boombox Radio.com, was voted by listeners as a Radio Crystal Blue Gem, and has been featured on over 100 internet radio stations. The release has also received widespread national and international radio attention.
The Drop Band is currently performing regionally from Maine to New Jersey developing an ever increasing fan base of their eclectic style. With plans to record a new project this winter, the band continues to grow and make new music.
