Een nieuwe generatie Groninger jazzhelden staat op de nog smeulende resten van het oude NoordPool Composers Orchestra (ook wel NPCO genoemd).
Deze nieuwe generatie maakt een veelzijdig orkest. Naast muzikale welvaart binnen een zich vlot vernieuwend repertoire van eigen composities, blijkt het orkest een goed gastheer. Voorjaar 1998 ontving het NPCO altsaxofonist Benjamin Herman, wat resulteerde in een vaste verbintenis. In samenwerking met de Stichting Jazz in Groningen en het Centre Culturel Francais ontmoette het later dat jaar het F.Thullier Trio op de ZomerJazzFietsTour, en de Parijse trompettist Serge Adam op de Jazzarathon.
"Lyriek, Breukeriaanse blues, minimal music, je vindt het allemaal terug bij het NPCO", verzuchtte een criticus.
