Story behind the song
I think my father had just called the day before. He wanted to see me and my brother and sister for the first time in five years. I pretty much told him to fuck off, and then went and wrote this song. Maybe I'll get to play it for him someday.
Lyrics
I was only four years old Always teared at words so bold You were too busy fighting To notice me on the couch crying I remember the hole that you punched in the door After climbing the stairs to the second floor And finding mom trying to keep us safe From a drunken man in a drunken rage Chorus: You never wanted us, supported us Never gave a shit about us How could you dismiss your own children at a glance? Now look at the kid that you abandoned The one who would kill you single-handed If he was only given the chance I was seven years old We were living in a rundown rowhome Heard a crash on the second floor Rushed upstairs to her open door Mom was crying on the edge of her bed The fight was obvious, the lies she was fed And like her hope the glass from the ashtray had shattered And joined the phone on the floor Chorus How many times did you break in at night Cuz mom thought it'd be better to lock the front doo How many times did you tell us lies About how you'd pay the child support You never wanted us, supported us Or took any interest in us How could you dismiss your own children at a glance? Now look at the kid that you abandoned The one who would kill you single-handed Cuz you left everything up to chance You left our whole lives up to chance If I was only given the chance…
