Story behind the song
Ron writes home to May, his fear at this time is that the war will be over before he and his mates have had a chance to experience battle. He is enjoying the comradship and the humour of his friends, particularly Harry who is a bit older than Ron but much shorter in stature.
Lyrics
Ron's letter to May Ron: My dearest May I write to you today to let you know that I've arrived We're at the front and it's so quiet here, but we're itching for a fight But they say it will be over by Christmas and it may end before we lads can have our say. I've palled up with a friend called Harry who keeps me laughing all day We talk about any and everything and Harry's always got something to say But they say it will be over by Christmas and it may end before we lads can have our say. Just to give you a smile Harry tells me he thinks that I'm too tall But it's because he can't see out of the trench on account of him being so small But they say it will be over by Christmas and it may end before we lads can have our say.
