Someone once told me this was the ultimate love song.
That's quite a compliment given it has such a naked arrangement.
Piano-based, stripped down demo's.
Um, it's just me, actually.
I'm just a songwriter who's cut a few demo's.
If you like 'em by all means drop me a line - I've got a shed-load more (fourteen by twelve)
Story behind the song
Well, a bloke from London asked me to come up with some melodies for his pre-penned lyrics.
I'd never tried it before but, one Saturday morning, his lyrics arrived and I somehow managed to get a verse and chorus for the first song in just 90 seconds.
So, the next day, I tried to nail another and, within 5 minutes, I'd come up with this little tune.
I must admit, I didn't think it was anything to write home about but, when Tammy came round to decide what tracks we'd take into the studio, I played her this melody by mistake.
I said "sorry, I've hit the wrong button on the keyboard" ... but she said "let it play, it is lovely!"
To be honest, Tammy didn't go a lot on the bloke's lyrics so she asked me to come up with a new set so that she could sing it as a sad, piano ballad.
And, I must admit, when we actually cut this demo, I was really glad I hit the wrong number on my keyboard that evening.
Lyrics
Always
Just told it to the birds
Don’t think they understood
Don’t think they cared
Nobody overheard
Don’t matter if they did
They ain’t been there
Chorus
So right here
Right now
I make this vow-ow-ow
I make this vow
That I will always
Love you
Yes I will always
Be true to you
Our valley sweeps the land
It’s oh so quiet here
All on my own
Life never goes as planned
But should I die right here
Let it be known
Chorus
Bridge
Could never love you more
Could never love you more
Nobody in this world could love
No one, the way that I love you
Chorus
Just told it to the birds
Don’t think they understood
Don’t think they cared
