Story behind the song
#2 on Artists-On-Line.com Soft Rock Charts (July 2005) #12 on Artists-On-Line.com All Genre Charts (July 2005) David Austin's Musical Thoughts: When I heard Richard's vocal demo it reminded me of an old riff of mine so I took it from that, it seemed to fit it perfectly. I had to change the vocal melody as it was too low for me to sing in places. I added a bridge. All in all I'm pleased with the result. It brought to mind a riff from an old song of mine called "Harvest Time", the only change was to keep the notes ringing all through, otherwise it fit like a glove. The song it came from is not on my list to re-record so there's no problems there. Richard Anderson's Musical & Lyrical Thoughts: Love the 80's kinda style to this, Theres an anthemic sorta thing in there which is really cool, The original vocal demo was kinda country orientated. The riff is pretty darned neat......definitely something I could see going off if we could ever get David outta retirement to do some gigs. For some reason it sounds to me like a familiar sorta sound, you know how sometimes you hear a new song and theres certain elements of something that you feel you can relate to other songs you mighta heard before....and I'm not talking about the vocals being familiar either. I had a bit of a chuckle to myself the first time that I listened to this song coz I could imagine that guy Luke from NZ Idol doing his beatbox thing near the end there like he did when he sang Supergroove's classic "Sitting Inside My Head". Yep another one nailed ! Well done Davo. From a lyrical standpoint this song was all about someone facing their own immortality and then learning to live with that, theres a few things there in that lyric that make it kind of personal to myself so really I've given up a piece of my own life to this song and that's cool, normally when I do that I try to encorporate things that all 3 of us guys can relate to in our own lives, hopefully the other 2 guys can stand by me on this one and don't see it as selfish input on my behalf.

Cry Freedom Lyrics: Richard Anderson Music: Richard Anderson/David Austin Musical Arrangement: David Austin Lyrical Adaptation: David Austin Original Vocal Conceptual Demo: Richard Anderson Produced By David Austin Vocals: David Austin Guitars, Bass, Programming: David Austin Look at your son He's blessed with dedication It might be his way Or his undoing He don't know much But you can see it in his eyes He wouldn't leave you pain Or cause you harm Look at your brother Bitter in desperation He don't know where to turn It might curse him And it might beat him Hey don't let it show I'm just letting you know So cry freedom For the one For the one that got away Cry freedom Let your heart in So we can just drift today Look at your boy He's all grown up And he's holding a torch for all to see He can make it If given the chance He can shine So do him a favour Keep it in mind And put yourself in his shoes So cry freedom To your fathers and sons To the daughters we won't let outdoors Cry freedom to the one For a mother deserves not to cry anymore In every hardship he learns a lesson Let yourself walk in his shoes He can shine So keep it in mind But don't forget to check yourself For a mother deserves not to cry anymore So cry freedom for the one For the one that got away Cry freedom Let your heart in So we can just drift today Cry freedom To your fathers and sons To the daughters we won't let outdoors Cry freedom to the one For a mother deserves not to cry anymore Cry freedom Cry freedom Cry freedom
