My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
He dug his heel in the soft brown dirt as he leaned on the fence feelin' bitter then cursed About what he’d heard a few moments ago He thought she’d be alone in their room upstairs a place he used to call home What he found was the sound of a man and a woman’s groan Everything had changed that day and the lines grew deep on his weathered face Everything he’d ever done was only done for her As far as he was concerned he was gonna to keep his word But the line between love and revenge began to blur CHORUS He started down a dark trail Yeah, a dark trail Headed down a dark trail as close to Hell As a man can be Forever ended that afternoon with the voices he head coming from that room He’d known 'em both for nigh on thirty years He knew he'd been played a fool and her love had turned into a ruse And what he was gonna do was perfectly clear As they lay there still entwined they laughed about him being blind And talked about how they’d explain his accident That was planned for that night a scheme to them was very bright But they never thought it would go the way it went CHORUS They were on a dark trail Yeah a dark trail On a dark trail as close to Hell As a man can be They dressed and started down the stairs he was sitting in a parlor chair With an old shotgun with both the hammers back He looked at her she looked at him the man just stood there in the sin As the metal dropped deep in the firing pin CHORUS (repeat) He was on a dark trail Yeah a dark trail Headed down a dark trail as close to Hell As a man can be He disappeared or so they say and the sheriff never entirely explained The note he found on the back porch door that day That said I kept my promise; I never lied: I love her till the day she died, Now I’m gone like her to the nearest faraway place CHORUS Forever on the dark trail Yeah the dark trail Forever on the dark trail as close to Hell As a man can be He's on the dark trail On the dark trail Forever on the dark trail as close to Hell
