My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
Eli was the only name I’d ever heard him called A crusty man, calloused hands who could do it all Said he drew strength each day from sittin’ in the saddle How he loved that cowboy life ‘n the west was his chapel Green cowhands, learnin’ things as we watched him work At noon each day he’d ride away to the hills then return One night I asked just what he saw when he rode off all alone He said, Son, sometimes a man just has to get off on his own, cause CHORUS On a good day in Montana You can see forever On a clear day you can see all the way To Heaven - in Montana The campfire tales Eli spun always made you think Remindin’ us how blessed we was, the joy of simple things He’d sigh ‘n stare up to the sky, a gaze that looked respectful Said he loved the cowboy life that made him somethin’ special And one mornin’ storms were moving in across the valley floor Thunder crashed as lightnin’ flashed, the sky began to pour Steers were getting’ nervous Eli never said a word As he saddled up his horse and rode off towards the herd CHORUS (repeat) The herd was runnin’ toward the camp two thousand total number No one could survive a stampede of this size it was louder than the thunder The sky was lit when lightening hit the steers leadin’ the charge And we saw Eli turn the herd amidst the mud and sparks Twenty-one young cowboys lives were saved that May By a man with calloused hands I think of everyday We never saw ole Eli again a spur was all we found But now and then from the hills I see him ridin’ in the clouds, cause CHORUS (repeat) TAG
