Story behind the song
I had lunch at the Salton Sea back in the late 80's. The place sorta gave me the creeps - it seemed like a "ghost town" setting. It was eerily quiet - no birds, no bugs, no life... sorta like your spirit in depression, frustration, spiritually dead. These lyrics hopefully capture that.
Introspection to find one's own internal problems, spiritually bitter and angry, knowing that our own plans couldn't solve a problem this large. Eventually leads to disinterest, but still determined to stand and fight the problems you yourself created.
Speaking back at God, asking for help yet at the same time being fed up with waiting for His timing, actually getting to the point where your heart of stone can blindly accuse God of lying to you, but still you wait, listening for a whipser, hoping to be flooded again with some kind of spiritual peace and security.
All the while you know your spirituality cannot be shaken and you go through the motions as if nothing is wrong, but can you speak your true feelings to anyone but yourself? Would anyone listen, would anyone care? And what of the headstrong thinker that listens more carefully to his thoughts instead of his spirituality, that tiny whisper in the heart so easily drowned out by angst and hostility.
Ultimately we're led to surrender, sinking in misery, still thinking there was some type of "you do this and I'll do this" handshake deal between us and God. There are still issues to work on, but at this stage it's surrender. You crumble. You collapse and cave in and begin recovery.

Lyrics
Somehow, I ended up inside myself,
Staring out across a desert plain,
Barren and dry, enough to make you cry,
But tears could never make a difference here.
Failing, to find the reasons why I try,
So hard to make a difference in this world,
Fighting alone, holding the stone,
To slay the giant I invited here.
Stop this spinning, I'm wasting away,
Never winning, I'm walking away,
Stop this lying, I'm tired of finding
all these lies,
I'm waiting on the dirt,
I'm waiting on Your words,
I'm waiting for this water to rise,
Rise around me, rise above me...
Somewhere, deep inside my heart of hearts,
Flows a River made of golden truth,
Floating along, singing a song,
But dare I verbalize my jaded ruse?
Searching, and trying to find the reasons why,
My life is filled with bittersweet remorse,
I stood my ground, later I found,
The mind can kill the whispers of the heart,
Stop this spinning, I'm wasting away,
Never winning, I'm walking away,
Stop this lying, I'm tired of finding
all these lies,
I'm waiting on the dirt,
I'm waiting on Your words,
I'm waiting for this water to rise,
Rise around me, rise above me...
Sinking, in dust and ash of promises,
I thought we had agreed would always be,
Take this away, and bring me the day,
Where water fills this valley once again...
