Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
Early in 2017 I found myself cleaning a kitchen window sill, which was inexplicably inhabited by a cactus. I manoeuvred carefully round the evil looking plant to avoid getting spiked, but I still managed to impale myself straight away, earning a painful spine in the finger. In the afternoon this riff fell off the guitar and I called it Cactus Spine to mark the traumatic event. I did recover. Later in the year I wrote this lyric but I liked the title so much that I had to weave it into a verse somehow so I could keep it. Another of my hobby horses - about that niggly suspicion that our favourite tech giants are up to something behind our backs. If only we could work out what it all means. Alexa, what's my opinion? For the musos, this at first sounds like a formula riff song but listen closer and you will hear the admonishments of Cesar Franck - "modulate, modulate" he famously told his students. I think this song shifts between about 7 different keys. Count 'em.
Lyrics
More they supply More we demand Speed of the eye Deceives the hand You're certain that the medicine has eased the pain Yet you haven't even taken off the Cellophane When the machine stops Everybody panics No-one understands the mechanics How can life without it be that tough We didn't even know that we needed the stuff We've forgotten how to listen We've forgotten how look We know the information's missing Nothing's written in the book There's something rotten in the kitchen And it isn't just the cook It's just we don't know who to listen to We don't know where to look There's a feeling I can't define Like a cactus pressed into my spine There's something going on that we can't see And I doubt it's for the benefit of you or me They gain our trust They sow the seed On coded channels We can't receive All our decisions predicted and assumed Without us even realising we've been groomed We've forgotten how to listen We've forgotten how look We know the information's missing Nothing's written in the book There's something rotten in the kitchen And it isn't just the cook It's just we don't know who to listen to We don't know where to look We've forgotten how to listen We've forgotten how look We know the information's missing Nothing's written in the book There's something rotten in the kitchen And it isn't just Tim Cook It's just we don't know who to listen to We don't know where to look

Absolutely brilliant!! Stunningly good lyrics - hits the nail on the head. Great melody, fantastic arrangement and production and expertly performed. Definite winner.
