This week's Transit Talk focuses on the large fare increases in Hamilton and throughout the GTA. On September 1, HSR riders saw their cash fares rise almost 20% from 2.55 to 3.00. Fares are even higher in Halton's three systems at 3.50 cash fare

Perhaps the largest increase will be for riders riding from Hamilton to Burlington as BT has recently stopped accepting HSR transfers.
The large increases in cash fares are apparantly being made to force riders to get Presto cards - but this poses a real problem for many bus users who are low in funds and lack computer access. Councils and transit managers throughout the GTA believe that transit riders should cover a much larger portion of transit costs, but cost recovery comparisons to other systems across North America show that this goal is very unrealistic.
