Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
Written for the 2014 annual CBC Hootenanny celtic music challenge. Bit of a rush job this - I was on holiday and yet again thought I just wasn't going to have time to do a song but I am hopelessly addicted - the fun level of these challenges is just too high to pass up. I wanted to do so much more with it, you know - orchestra, marching band, choir, the whole bit, but by the time it was written I only had 2 evenings left for recording so piano and guitar will have to do. NB I have no allegiance to either side of the "mad divide" - this is just my observation as a baffled outsider. Big kudos once again to Jude and Bobby for putting the effort into setting these marvelous challenges.
Lyrics
When will the ocean touch the sky? When will the Shannon's vale fall dry? When will the wind neglect to blow Or swallows land on fallen snow? When will these storm-clad hills know peace? When will the fighting ever cease? Why do we make these things so hard? Maybe it's just the way we are. Do we prefer to understand The clenched fist to the open hand? When will these storm-clad hills know peace? When will the fighting ever cease? Why do we sustain this mad divide On the Lagan and the Clyde? When will the wounds heal Between the blue and the green? When will these storm-clad hills know peace? When will the fighting ever cease?

Anoher great one...beautiful and nice solo.
Dear Friend And Wonderful Musician Seth! This song was my favorite of the LAST CBC Song Challenge...your vocal is so touching with superb lyrics and instrumentation. When you created this wonderful tune, you could not have known that this was the final one for CBC and all of us at that GREAT MUSIC VENUE. And yet, for me, it could/should be the THEME OF THE COCONUT BLUES CLUB. Thank you for this CLASSIC SONG, and for the dl to our JBBQ Best of Best Songs Music Player. With Best Wishes Always, Bob (and the JBBQ "Guys") BTY - I should have mentioned that this song may well be your very best one ever - it deserves # 1 SC/Other Charts Status. It will forever be NUMBER ONE OF A KIND IN MY/OUR HEARTS!

Beautifully written - wonderful melody and superb lyrics. Love the way it grows in intensity, which kind of follows the emotions and feelings of those caught up with the "divide". Heartfelt piece of music and whatever one's beliefs, it is a song that can be appreciated by those on both sides of the fence. Awesome job.

Listening to this I was almost sure I had heard it before. Looking for the title didn't result in anything. Anyway, I got touched immediately by the simplicity here. In lyrics there are so many questions, uncertain themes. When does humanity finally make the right choices? A simple acoustic guitar, a piano, drums, a voice and lyrics. What more do you need? Very nice one!

A bit reminiscent of Fields of Gold at the intro before it blossoms into a very beautifully unique ballad. Great vocals mate!

Very beautiful ballad. Amazing that you managed to do this in such a short time. It is so well written, played and the lyrics are really great. I love the dynamics, the yelling and the guitar solo. It's just great - all of it :)
