Story behind the song
'Bout mid way through I realized I was writing this about my father. Or, rather, it wrote itself. And that's all I can describe about the creative process.
Lyrics
(I Just Can't Believe That They're) Payin' Me for This I. My daddy sat me down and told me "Life and its enjoyment is More or less a matter of What matters most to you. So with a little luck and love and Diversified employment and an Attitude of gratitude You'll keep on pushin through, son!" Chorus: He always knew deep down inside there's More to life than makin' money. (He) Always had to sing a song or two. By workin' hard he made me see that Happiness, well, it's up to me. So I just can't believe that they're payin' me for this. II. He never shied away from any honest day of workin', From truckin' cross the country to Layin' bricks to haulin' hogs. He knew to get the pay he had to Play the game to git it. So he worked like hell but he'd Never sell his soul to any job. ('Cuz)...repeat chorus Bridge: "Keep your head" is what the old man said. "And to thine own self be true. "And you just might live the Way you want to live. (ahem) If you got the right kinda woman, that is." Copyright 2008 by D.C.Hal
