My first instrument was a tin drum, followed by an egg cutter, seriously, before moving on to a skiffle bass I concocted with a couple of pals, washboard was not my scene. I played the triangle in my first live performance in the band at primary school and have never had to count so many bars of silence in my life since then. Getting on in years I discovered an old broken-down banjo which united the tin drum and the egg cutter in one instrument with greatly superior resonance until damp and damage took its toll. I moved on to my first guitar, a British-made es-175 copy, when I was 12. The guitar was a nasty piece of work with a tendency to snap strings in the face of the player and with enough space between the strings and the fretboard to fly a 'plane through, but I loved it and, having lost the top two strings permanently, announced the guitar had become a bass and joined the school's unofficial R'n'B band as bass player with no idea what I was meant to be playing. This soon changed with the discovery of John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy and the like..............
Years later I am still playing with joy and intensity though the music I play has logically evolved into whatever the listener chooses to name it to-day, and I have had the privilege of earning my living for quite a few years as a musician for which I thank all those who helped and supported me, not the least by coming to the concerts and gigs.
