Band/artist history
After two critically acclaimed albums with the power-pop band The Tories, front man Steve Bertrand has embarked on a new musical journey with Avion.
The path to AVION's final landing is the culmination of years of creative and personal soul searching. After the amicable split of the Tories in 2002, Bertrand began the process of writing and recording songs for the yet to be defined follow up. "I wrote 22 songs and did a lot of solo acoustic shows working out the songs," explains Bertrand. "I was ready to stretch myself as a player and producer, but I really missed the element of being in a group." That realization became clear in the most unlikely of places, on stage in front of 40,000 people at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. "I was playing a benefit show. It was the biggest crowd I had ever played to, but being out there alone with just my acoustic made me realize how much I wanted a band again."
With that, the search was on for the best and brightest players to bring the songs to life. "I had a real sense of what I wanted" Steve explains, "There was a temptation to go with established musician friends, but I opted to go with the passion, feel and enthusiasm of guys that had not been beat up by the business." Drummer Jamie Wollam was enlisted first, followed by Joey Clement on bass. "I met Steve though the guys in Lifehouse", recalls Joey. "The songs were so strong and he was such a great singer, I jumped at the gig". Next came guitarist Josh Dunahoo, through mutual friends, followed by Ben Hazlett on guitar and keyboards. "I had only been in LA for a few months when I got the gig" says Ben, "it was great to connect with such a cool band so quickly". "The guys are young and independent with real ability and a zeal. "It's a great dynamic," Bertrand says. "Having written most of the songs on an acoustic, I didnt hear the finished versions until I played with the right five guys. You hear the power of the song with the right band. Thats what happened when we rehearsed for the first time. Thats when I remembered why I make music." AVION was now ready to fly.
Produced by Bertrand, the album is a powerful collection of both truthful and emotionally purging songs. Stealthily gliding between the bombastic blast of 'Perfect From Now On' to the orchestral verve of 'Love Is Here Again', AVION has few musical boundaries. "Theres so many different flavors on the record" says Bertrand. "I had an older brother, so I grew up listening to the Cars and Cheap Trick. Those records would have a heavy song, and then a slow one. Thats missing from records now". That dynamic intensity is in no short supply here. 'Bulletproof Glow' and 'Trinidad And A DC-10' boast a sonic punch, while 'Falls Back On Me' finds beauty in its hauntingly bare production. The first single and stand out track from AVION's auspicious debut is 'Seven Days Without You'. "The song really revolves around that universal feeling you have after losing someone, when you're calling everyone you know and trying to fill your day with anything to keep from going crazy and numb that nagging sense of longing". The album also features the notable talents of musical guests Rami Jaffee (Wallflowers) on B-3, Sergio Andrade (Lifehouse) and Matt Bissonette (Ringo Starr) on bass with Stuart Brawley (Don Henley) in the co-producer chair on four tracks.
With the album complete, AVION is taking the songs from the studio to the stage. "We love playing these songs live", says Bertrand. Drummer Wollam adds, "There's such a great chemistry between the band, and taking this on the road, getting to connect with an audience, that's the best part".
"I am more fulfilled with this band than ever" remarks Bertrand, "Its like starting over."
