Band/artist history
Born Malcolm Jamaal Staley on May 11, 1990, Young Joker has come a long way living in the raw streets of Southeast, Washington D.C. Having almost met death seconds after meetin life, Young Joker was a child destined for greatness in his eyes. from not breathing after just exiting his mothers womb to having his life saved again after battling pneumonia weeks later after birth. Young Joker beleives he is here for a reason no matter if it's being one of the greatest rapper of all-time or an employee at Burger King flipping burgers like his depended on it. "To me even if its not rap im here! you feel me and for a reason. I dont give a F**K if it's flipping patties at Burger King or MacDonalds somebody gonna eat that pattie. And hey it might even be a homeless person who just needed that one pattie to live and I fix that pattie. I saved he or she life just by cooking a pattie for them Ya Digg! However Im a Rapper and thats what I loved to do and Im good at it. Now you tell me what Im destined for, Burger King?" said Young Joker to Interveiwer. Young Joker started rapping at age 12 while looking up to Hip Hop legends such as Tupac and Biggie Smalls. His also a huge fan of the early and late great Cash Money Team. "All man Cash Money one of the greatest things that happened to Hip Hop since Death Row Ya Digg! And Weezy got the game on lock right now. I've been listening to his s**t since he first came to the game. I wish they all could've settled their differences though cause alot of niggaz compare my group (Top Shelf) to them and their outcome turned out for the worst" said Young Joker. Before, Young Joker used to go by the rap name "Geno" along with his now ex-groupmates Calibur and Tec. However, they would soon be dismantled when Young Joker and Tec almost reached an Physical altercation with one another in their classroom and Young Joker and Calibur went their seperate ways after graduating 8th grade. "Oh Calibur yeah thats still my nigga "L.O.P" b***hes all-day. We actually talking bout doing something together we just need to find time right now cause I got ideas and Im pretty sure he does to so look foward to that. Also look foward to that "I Smell Murdah" Mixtape with Me along with my nigga Don Meechie F. Ya Digg. And look out for that "Crunchtime" Mixtape with my niggaz Crucial Thoughtz and Big Sixx Both coming in the begining of 08' Ya Digg!" said Young Joker. A year later he would join another group called Young Squad, 17th & Q Records. This group included Meechie, Big Sixx, South Soulja, The Influence, and the two newest members at the time Young Joker and Crucial Thoughtz. However, having a problem with the no cursing rule at the studio the group recorded at Young Joker decided not to record with them."Man I was like f**k that. I wanna get my point across and alot of times cursing help you get alot off your chest you feel me. You cant even say nigga let alone cursing so basically all you got is love songs, party songs, etc. now thats cool but im like you trying to make us a one dementional group doing that cause on every song we talking bout the same shit and it gets tiring. So then I was like alright I got something for them, Im gonna rap in a certain way that I can rap about what I wanna rap about and get my point across without no intervenance" said Joker. And that he did after months of waiting he attacked the booth with his verses on songs like "Rock Steady" and "Dayz Of Our Lives" also hits like "Tha Streets" and "Rotate". He was bringing fire to every song he was on including his first single "Ballad Of A Soulja". That song really show how lyrically inclined he is and it took notice to people who didn't beleive he had it in him. Including his own group! "You go and ask Meechie right now if he knew that I was such a good rapper. None of them thought I had it in me cause I never wanted to rap in that studio and at that point it was the only affordable studio for us so I wasn't doing not one damn record" Joker said. The group would soon change their name to "Top Shelf" after a performance at the La' Pearl where they contantly kept messing up their name. Also because of it being too regular and plain. Top Shelf soon clashes with "another group" in the D.C. area after it was rumors of them saying they would smash Top Shelf in music or the streets. "Oh yea that was just for fun but its all over we talking bout doing something together now. It was just a little rivalry type of beef being as though we both come from the same area nothing serious. but they took shots at us and we was like alright then lets go the war (laugh). We shoot back with the "Renegade Remix". Something slight ya digg!. But hey they came back at us with a teack called "Step Ya Game Up". But look out for the Top Shelf and Tha District Boyz Mixtape coming soon said Young Joker in interview. Now, Top Shelf only consist of four members Meechie who is also producer of all Top Shelf records, Big Sixx, Crucial Thoughtz, and Young Joker. Others are part of a Record Label Top Shelf is putting together called Wrectified Records. Artist such as Taye, Jenay, Kane, Mi-Mi, and others. Projects that Top Shelf is working on are Mixtape called "I Smell Murdah" and "Crucnhtime" expected to release in early 2008. Contact me at 301-412-2174, Malcolm Staley.
