Star Quality Portland hip-hop and rap artists Mackin' Rob, also known as Rob Bacote (from left); Tommy Gunz, aka Tommy Mitchell; and MacTay, aka Dontay Antoine. By Jaymee R. Cuti/The Portland Observer Portland's urban black music scene needs help, according to a young rapper, musician and owner of his own record label. The city is not without talent, says Brian Mason Jr., but local performers suffer from a lack of unity and have difficulty finding breakout success. Mason is trying to combat that by working with hip-hop and rap artists in what he calls "the movement" and setting them up with professional quality recordings and marketing. "We have good talent and we want to add rappers with the concept that multiple rappers can have a group and a solo career and support the movement to break out of this local rap scene," he says. Mason is also his own client. As B Maja, he performs for Pound 4 Pound records and works behind the scenes with Young F.A.M.E., one of the most anticipated groups to emerge from the local music scene. Mason functions as the group's engineer and promoter. He gets help from Young F.A.M.E.'s vocal talents, including Dontay Antoine (MacTay), Tommy Mitchell (Tommy Gunz) and Rob Bacote (Mackin' Rob). Antoine works at Geneva's Shear Perfection Barber and Beauty Salon just north of Killingsworth Street on Northeast Martin Luther King Boulevard where he hands out three-song edits for promotion. Mason says Young F.A.M.E. stands above other groups because of its industry sound. "You put our CD in and it sounds like it was put together with brilliance. All the tracks, all the beats are a crisp, quality production," he says. So far, Young F.A.M.E. has recorded The Movement, a CD due for release in the next couple of months, featuring the hit single, "Lostland," currently on the playlist during the Starchile's: The Underground, a hip-hop and rap show that airs each Sundays from 9 p.m. to midnight on Jammin 95.5. The CD is directed toward a broad audience and also features "In Luv Wit" and "Get Money." Young F.A.M.E. performed at the recent Poh-Hop hip-hop festival and was a leading act last month at the Crystal Ballroom. They perform each Wednesday night at the Icon. On West Coast tours, the group has hooked up with popular artists such as Snoop Dog, Dog Pound, Bad Ass, Too Short, 112, Ginuwine and others.
