Whereabouts Underground is an independent recording project started by me (Mark Lord) and maintained by the vocalists who choose to participate. I write the songs, play the instruments and recruit singers to do the vocals. Vocalists include Raymond Lord, Jamie Murphey, Tom Schimmel, Philip Williams, Stacy Mathis, Leslie Walden, Jamie Benko, Bethsheba Yahudah, Star Scott, Rebecca Hall, Fiona Sheehan, Bonni Farmer, Alex Castellanos....just to name a few. Whereabouts Underground was started in 1998 as an extension to what I'd been doing since the '70's (writing songs and playing for anyone who would listen). Until 2007, the ultimate goal was to give away as much music as possible. In 2007, I learned about the Maue Kay Foundation. It's a charity started by John Kay (of Steppenwolf) and his wife Jutta Maue Kay. They work independently as well as with other charities to protect human rights, the natural environment and wildlife. My friends and I have decided to dedicate Whereabouts Underground to raising as much money as possible, through CD sales, to donate to The Maue Kay Foundation. Visit their website at mauekay.org.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I enjoyed playing live several years ago, but lately I've been concentrating my time and money recording.
Your musical influences
Collective Soul, Steppenwolf, Uriah Heep (especially Uriah Heep), Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Godsmack.
What equipment do you use?
Our music isn't techno, but I'll answer this anyway. I use a Boss 1180 digital recorder with a Yamaha MD4S and a computer. I play a 1999 Gibson Les Paul (that was the only year Gibson made a double cut-away Les Paul). I use a Boss ME30 effects unit, Casio keyboards, Shure mikes and a wide variety of drum machines.
Anything else?
I hope you enjoy the music at Soundclick. Full-length CD's are available. E-mail mark12178@hotmail.com. Also visit our myspace page, myspace.com/whereaboutsunderground.
