Aspiring dark, melancholy alt-rock outfit out of SLC.
Band/artist history
Violet Run is a dark, melting glide of smooth melodies, intricate guitar-picking, harmonic bass riffs, raw, primal drumming and visceral vocals. Sometimes the music is relenetlessly pounding, sometimes it’s as delicate as a sigh, but the music is one thing always: riveting. Non-traditional song structures and veering musical movements thrust Violet Run into a world apart. They are tinged with 80s dark rock, but are organic; they are goth-flavored yet the actual guitar riffs and drumming echo the primitive feel of old classic rock and nascent grunge. They encompass older sounds like The Cure and Smashing Pumpkins, but come closer to the modern swirl of A Perfect Circle. Violet Run got their name from a short story of violence and suppression, and their music follows suit; brutal and despairing, it drowns you to death in an angst completely devoid of artifice. Yet the music retains a dark warmth, powerful and connecting. “Violet Run are the most intense pack of musicians this side of Brooklyn.” Fletcher Booth, SLUG Magazine, 5/2002 Violet Run is: Randal Alexander Blandon: Vox, lead guitar Joseph Scott Dolan: Guitar Travis David Pierce: Bass Jinny Kathleen Peterson: Keyboards Rebecca Kent Vernon: Drums Violet Run has been together for three years, meeting and forming through mutual friends. They’ve recently gone through a lineup change, and are primed to add new bassist Travis Pierce, fresh out of the Air Force, in the fall. Violet Run plays regularly and has played Sabbathon 2001 (a SLUG Magazine fundraiser with local bands), Localized in 2001 (SLUG Magazine’s monthly local band showcase), City Weekly’s 10th Anniversary Party, City Weekly’s SXSW Showdown to Austin Semi-Finals and Utah’s annual Dark Arts Festival for three years running. Violet Run released their first album, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, May 2002 through Red Triangle Records, and are set to release an upcoming EP in summer 2004. Violet Run will be going on weekend tours beginning summer 2004.
