Band/artist history
Vessy began her recording career in Chicago, as a hired electronica singer, where she recorded on tracks with legendary musicians such world renowned drummer Kenny Aronoff. After arriving in Los Angeles in 1998 Vessy Mink began writing and recording demos with Matt Sorum of The Cult, Guns & Roses and Velvet Revolver fame and then formed her first Los Angeles band, The Lovesick Lunatics, with Jason Art, Josh Rifkin and Craig Sharp. In 2000, together with the Love Sick Lunatics, she recorded âœBlack Carâ, an independently self released album, that ultimately led to signing a demo deal with Virgin Records in 2001.
Black car showcased the strength of Vessyâs Pop-Rock song writing, with such songs as âœHollywood Hang Meâ, âœLoveâ and âœTell Me Why?â. âœHollywood Hang Meâ went on to air for 3 straight months on The hit TV Series âœThe Gilmore Girlsâ, was licensed to Bud Light for a TV commercial and most recently licensed to LGO Productions, for inclusion in the indie film âœAnd So Life Goes Onâ a New Jersey based romantic comedy written and directed by Claudine Liss.
After playing for audiences in Los Angeles venues such as The Mint, The Temple Bar, The House of Blues, The Joint, The Gig, and many others, unfortunately, The Lovesick Lunatics, broke up only after two years. Vessy can also be seen from time to time performing different vocal styles from Balkan to Blues to Tin Pan Alley tunes as part of the crinoline-clad, show stopping trio, âœThe Smiling Minksâ with Moira Smiley and LAâs "diva deluxe" Suzy Williams.
Vessy Mink has continued to perform in LA and host numerous acoustic nights at places such as the Viper Room, The Cows End, The Derby and The Brickhouse Kitchen in Venice, Ca. Most recently, Vessy moved back to Chicago, and is currently hard at work, developing a new studio album of passionate songs.Have you performed in front of an audience?I do play live. I recently moved back to my hometown of Chicago, Illinois after living out a good chunk of my dreams in sunny Los Angeles for 10 years, and I find it very comforting, challenging and equally strange to be back to where "it" began for me. I love last minute shows, and super cool venues that are underground, as well as large venues like the Metro on Clark St. I have played a few venues since returning to Chicago, like Iggy's on Dearborn and a festival here and there. For the most part I am laying low, and have been contemplating my songwriting craft, and have been writing new songs and growing in many different ways, shedding old ideas, thoughts and pursuing new dreams and aspiring to new themes. I love playing live. There is nothing more fun than sharing music with others.
Your musical influences
Old Bulgarian songs are a huge inspiration, as well as the newer ones being written today. I also am a huge fan of Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach and many other classical composers. I grew up on the Beatles "White" album. And some of my first musical inspirations are from my grandmother, my father and my songwriting sister, Antje. I also grew up listening to Abba and Bob Marley and the Wailers, thanks to my dear mother. I lived for Michael Jackson's album Billie Jean when it first hit the stands, and Cyndi Lauper caught all of my attention after hearing her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun album, debut on FM radio in the 80's. Some early teen inspirations for me pan such movies as Flashdance and the Sound of Music. I was going crazy forTracy Chapman and Sinead O'Connor, Depeche Mode, the Cure, Yaz and Erasure in my mid to late teens. Then onto Janis Joplin, the Steve Miller Band, the Eagles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Yes, Queen, The Byrds, Led Zeppelin and Velvet Underground and many, many other's. I of course have totally loved Madonna since she graced the radio! I am a big fan of the heart stopping Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, as well as big band Charlie Parker Quintet and countless other Jazz ensembles having anything to do with the "Duke" Duke Ellington! Some more obscure inspirations come from the Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. I love the songwriting of David Baerwald and Joni Mitchell, Will Sexton and gotta throw the Mama's and the Papa's in there as well. I could keep going on for days on why the Police rocked my world as well as the Cars, and Liz Phair, Tori Amos, Sarah Maclachlen and NIRVANA!!! I just love good music and the genre does not matter. I love Dolly Parton, and Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers and lot's of other great country music. Any music from the heart...I love.Contact
