Story behind the song
I got the inspiration for this song from a book by Dr. Ferrell Sams called "Run With The Horsemen". He tells a brief story about the grandfather who somehow gets into financial trouble and mysteriously comes up with the money to save the land. "The source of the money was never clearly established" or something like that.

The Farmer Stephen D. Butler ©2006 All Rights Reserved PO Box 700 Felda, FL 33930 Steve51753@yahoo.com (239)810-2821 Country Verse 1 My dad was a farmer, he lived off the land He spoke from his heart and he worked with his hands Up before daylight, dinner at noon Watched over by the full harvest moon He taught me to love and cherish the land To thank God above And don’t stop the work till it’s done And never cheat anyone He said “I’ll help you make it. It belongs to you, son” Chorus And we’ll save up our money for seed And all the things we’ll need We’ll plant all this land and we’ll make a stand And next year we’ll do it again Verse 2 When Dad passed away the farm came to me I had some good years, at least two or three Up before daylight, dinner at noon Watched over by the full harvest moon And I fell in love and she took my hand We promised each other We won’t stop the work till it’s done We’ll never cheat anyone She said “I’ll help you make it and I’ll give you a son Chorus Verse 3 But the prices got low, the drought was severe The bank set a date for the land auctioneer Up before daylight, dinner at noon I left home by the full harvest moon And on the last day I showed up with the money She said “Where’d you get it? Don’t ask me honey, it’s done I didn’t cheat anyone But I won’t let ‘em take it. It belongs to our son Chorus
