Story behind the song
I was working on another tune and as I went to bed the tune and the words to the last verse came into my head. I got my guitar back out and worked out the last verse, then spent till 1:10am on the rest of it, then there were a few more changes the next day.
Lyrics
O the sun is shining over the folks in the church yard And my mama, she is crying, to see her little girl gone Some they say that we won't make it It's too rough, the road is long But when we reach the west we'll settle And we pray we'll prove them wrong We have reached the blessed west land Through many trials we have come In the spring the crops were planted And come the winter we'll be three As the summer sun is setting And our work is almost done We will love and live together Till our work on earth is done O the sun is shining over The cold stone he lies under And the autumn wind is blowing Cross the fields of golden grain We have lived and loved together And now our time to part has come We will meet and be together In our home beyond the sun
