DESCENDANTS OF ASAPH Asaph was the first and chief musician in the early days before the temple was built in Jerusalem. By all accounts (1Chron 16v5) he was a percussionist and drummer and together with Heman and Jeduthun formed the first worship band to accompany the choir in praise and worship of God He wrote a number of psalm lyrics under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. His lyrics are very down to earth and he likes to say things exactly as they are! 'Descendants of Asaph' follow in his tradition and is a virtual band dedicated to making music and song unto the Lord and presenting His challenge to the world today through parables in music. Story behind the song
Inspired by the trials of Job in the old testament. Job is having a hard time when nothing is going right. He vents his anger and frustration at God. God waits until his anger is spent then comes to him and reveals his majesty and power. Job recognizes God's sovereignty and that he is nothing. It has a happy ending by the way...
Lyrics
TELL ME IF YOU CAN The Lord spoke to Job: Won't you tell me, if you can Will the hunter catch his prey? Will his arrow strike the eagle Before breaking of the day? Ever striving in his quest Can he rest at last? As he takes his nightly journey On his herculean task Can you tell me, if you can What the nebula witholds? Hidden secrets of the universe The chemistry of worlds? Can you tell me where you were When the stars first shone When I laid the chief foundation stone And mother earth was born? Can you tell me if you can Who set the boundary for the sea Have you seen the gates of death Or my footsteps in the deep? Can you bind the seven stars Can you loose Orion's cords Do you know how stars are born Have you written heaven's laws? Can you take me, if you can To where lightning is dispersed To the place where winds are gathered To be scattered through the earth? Can you take me, if you can To the house of snow Do you know the pathway of the storm? Come, surely you must know! Job's Response: I have spoken hastily Of things I have no knowledge of I thought I knew the answers But I was very far from the truth Forgive my arrogance I bow my head in shame And lie down in the dust
