Band/artist history
The first notion of Unscathed first came about when two front men for two mediocre bands in Asheville were discussing their musical futures. May 30th, 2001, Justin Smith had just gotten through performing with his band Wrought. Matt Robinson, the front man for F.N.P., a band that had decided to go their separate ways a few days earlier, approached Smith regarding the band. Neither front man was happy with their current musical status, so Robinson suggested collaborating the members of the two bands, who shared common musical goals. Unscathed was born June 6th, 2001 with the lineup of former Wrought members Ryan Dodd on drums, Smith on lead guitar and former F.N.P. members Chris Gorglione on rhythm guitar, Troy "Fat Tony" Russell on bass and Robinson on vocals. Late September, after a few fairly successful shows, Smith decided to leave Unscathed. Early October, Gorglione brought in former co-worker Stephen Fesperman for a lead guitar tryout. Fesperman was welcomed in the band and brought with him totally new musical and writing styles. Robinson and Gorglione determined that a different rhythmic sound was needed to round out the new style. Around the end of 2001, Robinson called Russell to inform him that Gorglione would be replacing him on bass, and Fesperman would take on sole responsibility of the guitar duties. In February, Unscathed reluctantly unveiled the beginnings of their new lineup and sound to the public. Following a very educational show, many kinks were revealed that needed to be worked out. After some freezing cold practices and many tripped circuits, Unscathed felt ready for their next show: an Asheville Buncombe County Youth Council sponsored "Battle of the Bands". Unscathed closed out the show, a position the band had only been in one previous time. The show was a huge success. The crowd was energetic, the response was beyond belief and Unscathed ended up winning the "Battle of the Bands". Unscathed has since gained a loyal following and has been the topic of many discussions in circles of local music. Unscathed will be recording a demo CD soon and in late October and early November will be going into The Basement in Winston-Salem to have a studio quality EP released. Stay tuned, as you've only seen the beginning of what Unscathed has to offer.
