Band/artist history
BIOGRAPHY
The original incarnation of Twelfth of Never was formed in the autumn of 1997. Singer meets keyboardist/programmer and musical thoughts are shared...singer brings bassist and guitarist friends over to play. What was at first an idea to pass time and make music together soon became a dedication to an art.
Out of the ashes of former bands like Scattered Remnants and Blackened Chapel, as well as individual projects and solo endeavors, the list of influences and creative direction among the members was vast and varied.
Eclectic and "dark" seemed to be the direction, and that was the avenue down which ToN walked, each member carrying specific talents, tools, and personal auditory tastes. The result of this collaboration was what some might consider "darkwave", and was often categorized under the mellow side of the goth genre. Twelfth of Never's sound can be best summed up as "cerebral, mysterious, and filled with shadows".
Describing ToN's music has never been very easy. Comparing the style to any other band only holds true for particular songs, or may be within the same generalized style. To mention a handful of comparisons, the eclectic sound of Twelfth of Never has been likened to everything from Dead Can Dance, The Cranberries, Slowdive, and The Cure. The musical style of Twelfth of Never covers a lot of ground, but remains a style of its own.
From 1997 into '98, the band's lineup included vocalist Robin Tinker, bassist Ron Miles, guitarist Keith Alan Landry, keyboardist/programmer Matthew Davis, and guitarist Christopher Posco. The band composed and arranged seven songs and prepared to record them in the Spring of '98, with plans of eventually releasing a demo tape and taking the music out of the bedroom and onto a stage.
About a half a year later, ToN found themselves with some unplanned variations. Unfortunately, Chris decided to part ways with the band. Regardless, an 8 song self-released CD titled 'Blowing Bubbles Through Broken Windows' was completed and began finding its way to an audience in 1999. It was also then that this site was first constructed. The band carried on, promoting the CD as much as they could on their own.
Meanwhile, the band searched for another guitarist to fill their live line-up.
A few auditions later came Adam Zelny. After a few months of rehearsing and two new songs, ToN was finally ready for a performance. In spring of 2000, the band was billed as the opener with three other local acts in the back room of Jay's CDs store in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. The remainder of that year was spent with a number of performances in a wide variety of venues, including a planetarium, a coffee shop, and a club above a Thai restaurant. The seventh show was at The Middle East in Cambridge MA, performing on a stage that many of ToN's favorites had graced before them.
Things were looking up for Twelfth of Never, with live shows happening and the 'Blowing Bubbles' CD creeping its way around the globe, getting airplay on radio shows near and far. But, yet again, the line-up would not remain as it was for long. Adam decided to find his own path in 2001, occasionally stepping in for a few performances throughout the year. ToN's final show of 2001 occurred in Providence, RI.
On a much brighter note, it was during the summer of that year that the band was discovered by Dark Symphonies. ToN signed a deal to record their next album. The year 2002 came, the band staying intact as a four piece, writing new songs and staying on the look-out for another guitarist and live drummer. At some point that summer, ToN found part of that equation. Dave Brocksmith (guitar) was inducted into the band and stuck around proving to be highly dedicated and skilled at his craft. Ten new songs were composed and ready for the studio.
In October of 2002, ToN entered Tremolo Lounge recording studio in West Boylston, Massachusetts. The producer/engineer on the album was Roger Lavallee, of the band The Curtain Society. Derek Kerswill, on loan from Seemless lent his considerable talent to the mix with powerful live drums. Recording was silky smooth and finished in December. The completed work of 12 tracks, titled 'Things That Were', was sent to Dark Symphonies and released on a world-wide scale on July 22, 2003.
Five live performances occurred throughout 2003, with new songs for CD #3 being composed.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Twelfth of Never plays live on an infrequent basis around New England. We do enjoy it assuming their aren't any major sound glitches. We love appreciative crowds - especially when we see people dance to our music.
Your musical influences
film and literature play a big part in our influences...as well as our surroundings. We all seem to agree that autumn in New England is our favorite time of year. Dark, spooky, Halloween-imagery with falling leaves and writhing trees in the moonlight...perfect.
What equipment do you use?
We have two guitarists that use electric guitars with an occasional Washburn acoustic, our bass player plays a six string, and the rest of the music comes from the keyboardist/programmer who uses: Korg N1 synth, Korg X5D-R module, Roland XP30 synth, Roland MC-50mkII sequencer, dual Boss DR-5 drum machines (as modules), an Akai S2000 sampler, effects by Digitech, Zoom, and Alesis, and a Roland VS-880v2 workstation for recording and live playback.
Anything else?
, which was released in the summer of 2003, is slowly but surely finding its way around the world and has been praised by a very high percentage of critics, dj's and dark music fans alike. At last count, there were 20 online distributors for the album and the number continues to grow.
We are currently arranging performances and writing new material for CD #3.
We were recently interviewed in 'Gothic Beauty' magazine issue #12.
...and, we have been chosen to perform at the annual Vampire and Victims Ball in Salem MA on October 29 2004.
We've also gone under promotions with Initial Sequence Productions (www.initialsequenceproductions.com), which handles alot of groups like Mentallo And The Fixer and Ikon.
