Our call is to bring light to the darkness. We will continue to play our music and share our lives with the people who need it. As Christians we are called to share the gospel with others and we feel that it leads us to all areas of the world. Music is the universal language and through music we can use our strengths and weaknesses to help others change their lives and start again in the right direction.Band/artist history
The Waters Edge is a modern/alternative Christian rock group from Huntington Beach, California. Formed in 1996, this band mixes together melodic tones and driving rhythms to create a new powerful sound. With influences ranging from bands such as Pearl Jam, Creed, Live and Metallica to The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Tori Amos and Van Halen. The Waters Edge is part of a new breed of Christian bands.
After meeting through friends, Brian (drums) and Ryan (guitar) started playing music in their garage on weekdays. As time went on they found that they had something special brewing in their music and friendship. Beginning in 1996, they created the band and called it The Waters Edge after the song by Seven Mary Three and due to the strong force that water represents.
For an eight month period, the band asked friends and family to play music with them as they looked for permanent members.. Then in early 1997 they recruited Jason Mattheis, a guitar player from Montana who had been working with Brian at the John Wayne airport. Brian then tapped his long time neighbor, Chris Morris (bass) to play with them while he was on a break from commercial fishing in the Alaskan outback. It would take another 18 months of auditioning singers until they placed an ad with a local music magazine, The OC Weekly, and found their choice. Matt Payne (vocals) had responded to the ad with enthusiasm and talent. Though he had never been in a band before, he had the right attitude to place him in the band. With the members in place, the band was to embark on a new journey.
The band practiced endlessly and started to contact local venues and night clubs in order to get their first gig. Their first break came when a local venue across from the airport called them to play a show which another band had cancelled at the last minute. Without hesitation the band accepted the gig. Although the show didn't result in a major record deal or pack the house, everyone inside the club was blown away by the sound and feeling from the emerging band.
Eventually, the band began to record their material and in 2000 the band recorded their first demo CD and continued playing local shows. On February 17th, 2001, The Waters Edge re-recorded their demo from March 2000. The band decided that their sound had progressed enough that it was clear that a new demo be made so that it could accurately depict their present sound. While the demo is still just a sample of their work, The Waters Edge decided to replace "Care" from the old demo with "Broken". This was done to ensure that any person listening to the new recordings would have a clear picture on their current sound. This proved to be an excellent decision based on the final outcome and sound of the new recordings.
Today, The Waters Edge is stronger than ever. Although there has been setbacks which has caused confusion and frustration, the remaining members still continue to play music and work toward their goal of family life and a career in making uplifting music that will take us all on a journey of spiritual awakening.Have you performed in front of an audience? We play and live on the West Coast.
