Band/artist history
they were just a bunch of small-town punks with the heart to make it big...
Born in rainy down-town East Bergholt, Suffolk, The Wah started life as a cover band of the beat combo ‘Red Hot Chilli Peppers’. In those early days before the onset of television, 4 young bucks would while away the hours by imitating their Red Hot heroes and drinking cider in the surroundings of their local boozer, The Red Lion. The Lion would go down in folklore, as it was within the walls of that very establishment that The Wah first dreamed of sex, drugs and sausage rolls
a wah is born!
When they realised that their song-writing talent was too great for the world to miss, the members of the Wah ditched the Chilli’s and donned their crowns as the UK’s premier funk outfit, playing shit-hot original material. If there was one thing those lads knew how to do, it was FUNK. And funk they did, from here to the Sudan. And back! But it didn’t happen over-night.
wah’s in their eyes...
Of course, back then the line-up was a little different, and although the four piece counted current members MALT (bass) and AL (guitars and backing vocals) amongst it’s members, drumming duties were undertaken by ex-D:REAM sticksman Ronge Pochenski and lead vocals were provided by Wilf ‘The Milf’ Street (formerly Limahl in the 80’s).
Some 6 months later, a chance encounter at Walthamstow dog track between AL and local saxophone legend ‘Gap-tooth’ Graham Gillespie AKA SAX, led to the latter’s appointment on horns. And when, in 2003, drummer Ronge Pochenski left the band to persue his love of fixing up old bikes, the Wah turned to television’s Martin Ward and his electronic side-kick ‘The Brain’, in the hope that his celebrity would bring renewed exposure for the band. Ward would later be credited with reviving the band’s fortunes after successful stints on ‘Family Fortunes’, ‘Knightmare’ and ‘Look East’.
the future...
These days, Wah fans can see Graham fronting the band after former lead vocalist Wilf quit in 2005, suffering from a mysterious illness that bore all the hallmarks of syphilis. Why not check out Graham and the rest of The Wah for yourself this summer, and witness what these punks do best rock the f*cking house! Make sure you regularly check the gigs page on this site for your chance to see a live Wah show.Contact
