Rock General

The Shills are: Bryan Murphy Voice, guitar, lyrics, composition, arranging Eric Ryrie Guitar, composition Dave Sicilian Bass, arranging, composition James Zaner Drums, arranging The Boston-based band The Shills was originally cast by guitarist Eric Ryrie, bassist Dave Sicilian, and drummer James Zaner. The beginnings saw a female singer as our sound was being developed. After many personal and musical bumps, she was replaced by Boston native, singer/songwriter Bryan Murphy. In February 2004 the current line up was finished and composing music for an Emergenza show at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA. This marked the first show for us, and spurred further composition from all members. Since then we released our first Demo. Its a 4 song demo consisting of the songs: 1)15 (M/L Murphy) 2) Sidewalk Strut (M Ryrie, L Murphy) 3) Little Men (M Ryrie, Murphy, L Murphy) 4) Sweet Foe (M/L Murphy) Our main influences include The Beatles, Ours, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Muse, Pearl Jam, Hawksley Workman, Mr. Bungle, Pedro the Lion, and others. Yet, each member brings a completely different approach and stylistic influence that coalesces into a strikingly original sound. This can only be classified as melodic, progressive, rock/pop. Eric and Dave grew up together in Newton and were in a rock band together in high school. James was in a different band at the time, and joined a year later. Bryan was singing, screaming, and playing guitar in the hardcore/grunge band Jerk from 1997-2001. Eventually he formed the rock/funk/pop trio This Fading Moment circa 1999-2003 in which he wrote most of the music, and all lyrics. When The Shills first started, Eric was the sole writer. When Bryan was added, it brought out a composition factory in the new collaboration between Eric and Bryan. With our eyes wide open, we look to the future. Touring, more recording, and collaborations are what we see. In this modern musical world, there are so few artists or bands that are stretching any boundaries at all. Thus, we made it our purpose to create beautiful, sophisticated and original music, and our goal is for the world to hear it
