Russell Gulley is a Muscle Shoals music veteran with major label credits and tour experience. As a founding member of the band, Jackson Highway,he was produced by Jimmy Johnson and David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section also known as the "Swampers", a nick name given to the band by Leon Russell and made famous by Lynyrd Skynyrd in the song "Sweet Home Alabama". After two decades of silence, Russell is now on the comeback trail with a new Cd titled,"Back to the Swamp" and getting rave reviews in such magazines as Gritz, here in the states, and Blues & Co. in France. "Back to the Swamp" is a funky Americana mix of blues, roots rock and roll, country and gospel.
Band/artist history
I started in Gospel music at the age of 16, first recording with a local country gospel group, then after a tour in Vietnam with the Army, I began a series of tours with artists of the day such as, Ruby Winters, Ronnie Dove, and Ray Petterson. I was then recruited to move to Muscle Shoals as a songwriter, founded Jackson Highway, produced by Lynyrd Skynyrd's producers Johnson and Hood, signed to Capitol Records and tours with BlackFoot, Ted Nugent, and others. By the 80's, I found myself in Nashville and decided to take a break that lead to a return to my hometown of Fort Payne, Alabama, and an involvement with traditional arts, arts in education, and folklife research, also some Public Radio Production. The 90's saw a return to perfroming with about a 3 year run with the beatdaddys, a Malaco recording bluesrock act, and national tours at prominent blues festivals and clubs. 2000 found me returning to my roots and writing. Collaborations with Johnny Hood and artists such as Carl Weathersby recording my material. Now i've released" Back to the Swamp" and beginning to poerform again with my own band ,thanks to the support of some mighty fine folks.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I play live year round here in the Southeastern U.S. in clubs, at festivals, arts venues, etc. and enjoy my "new" career very much. Any time I get to play on stage with the likes of Johnny Neel, Willie King, Chris Anderson (The Outlaws, Blackhawk, etc.) is very special indeed.
Your musical influences
I'm very much into the roots of Muscle Shoals, artists such as Tony Joe White, Eddie Hinton, Donnie Fritts, Dan Penn, and Johnny Wyker. I still have a Southern Rock side that appreciates the contributions of The Allman Brothers (very proud of my work with Johnny Neel),Blackfoot, and Skynyrd. My current work is acoustic and very roots oriented, mixed blues, gospel, folk, swamp, and rock and roll roots.
Anything else?
I appreciate all of the response today to my music. For an unknown to get such positive reactions and support at my age(58)is truly phenominal and I thank everyone involved.
