The word Lucky to many people may represent good fortune or being marked by good luck. But to this young emcee it signifies not only good fortune but also the desire and will power to always stay on top. Being that some parts of hip hop are about competition and that once in a lifetime chance to prove yourself. Lucky stops at nothing to prove he has what it takes. And that hes here to stay.
Born Leonard Justin Addison, November 28, 1988 to a Native American mother and a Black father. Lucky grew up in a single parent home in Saginaw, Michigan. But it wasnt always that way. When Lucky was a toddler both of his parents were in the home. And he and his older siblings had everything they wanted. And it seemed like life couldnt get any better for him, his sister and older brother. But like the saying goes all good things come to an end Lucky was no exception. Both of his parents were sentenced to time in prison and Lucky and his older siblings were quickly moved to Opelousas, Louisiana to stay with their grandmother. I really didnt know what was going on at the time because I was so young, said Lucky. And it was there that I kind of picked up country slang and learned how they hustled in the south. Being raised between a southern and mid-western town influences Luckys music. Soon Luckys mother was released from prison and they moved back to Saginaw. Growing up on the south side of Saginaw was different for Lucky. I was used to living down south, and like moving back to a town I didnt know much about as a big change, said Lucky. And the constant shootings was almost unbearable, says Lucky. By then Luckys parents were divorced so he was raised along with his sister by his mother.
My brother wasnt really around that much, said Lucky. But when he did come around he always made sure that me, my sister and my mother were ok. Being a single parent with two mouths to feed meant budgeting. So Luckys mother had to pick up two jobs. I knew she hated working long hours but she did it so that me and my sister wouldnt ever want for anything. Between paying bills and putting food on the table, Luckys mother couldnt give him everything he wanted. So like so many urban youths he turned to the streets as a way to make money. Since I didnt really have a father figure, I kind of looked up to the drug dealers and the dudes with the girls and money and cars says Lucky. I remember I started selling drugs at like 13 years old. I wasnt no kingpin or anything but I got by. I did it because people at school teased me because I wasnt fitted all the time or I didnt rock the new Jordans or anything. But to tell the truth I really didnt do anything with the money except spend it one on stuff not even worth buying. Lucky hustled on the streets with his childhood friend Bobby a.k.a. Lil Dolla. Me and my boy Bobby always did everything together. He was more than my best friend, he was family.
Lucky started writing lyrics at the tender age of 12 years old. But his skill for writing wasnt really complete. I didnt really take writing songs and rapping serious then. I just did it for fun. At the age of 14, Lucky met his older cousins Yung Red, Yung Murph and close friend Fly Boi. And they turned him on to rapping and structuring hooks and lyrics for songs. I remember when we all used to sit out in front of Chicos Party Store and they would tell me to practice on writing and try to teach me how to freestyle. I think they kind of help mold my skills to get it to where it is today says Lucky. Lucky took their advice and got to work.
Soon his cousins started a rap group and independent label called G Stack, which consisted of Fly Boi, Yung Red and Yung Murph. Yung Red prompted Lucky to join and thats exactly what he did. Growing up in Saginaw, you have to fit in somewhere, you got to have a crew. And I was with G Stack, that was my crew. But as soon as Lucky got comfortable with rapping alongside his cousins. Him and his mother relocated to Saint Paul, Minnesota. I wasnt really doing good in school, so I think my mother thought that if she moved me then I would straighten up. While Lucky stayed in Saint Paul, the rest of the crew held it down in Saginaw. They grew a really strong fan base through performances and drew the attention of well- known producer A.J. Alexander who has such credits as working with R&B group Cherish and R&B megastar Usher.
Now after a four-year hiatus since he even recorded on wax, Lucky is back aligned once again with G Stack. And with his independent debut album All Or Nothing set to release on G Stack Entertainment. Lucky is set to prove that he is not just another person with a microphone. If you ask a lot of rappers why they feel their number one, most will probably say because they have money, cars and women says Lucky. And a lot of rappers dont live up to their reputation. I dont want anyone to see me as a gangster but I want them to know I speak on that perspective. Ive seen people get shot, people selling drugs, girls getting flipped, people driving nice cars and getting paid so that is what Im going to talk about as well as people struggling to make ends-meat says Lucky.
So with that said. No longer should people think of the word Lucky as just a word or symbol of good fortune. But as the name of an emcee set to bring his own style to hip hop. And take on the hip-hop world full time. Most artists would claim how much they will change the hip-hop game but Lucky remains humble. I want to get my foot completely into the door of hip hop before I make any claims says Lucky. All I can say is Im bringing my own type of style. And I going by my own personal motto which is If You Dont Got It, Get It.
