Band/artist history
The Lights of 1964 was formed back in 2005 with a very different line-up. The original members were JC Jaime on guitar and vocals, Xtine on bass, Jet Jimenez on drums and David Mangubat on guitar. The sound of the band was different too. Originally a technopop, shoegaze type of band, the Lights of 1964 shifted gears in 2006 with the departure of vocalist JC Jaime and the sudden disappearance of original bassist Xtine. Left without a vocalist and bassist, drummer Jet and guitarist David sought out to get new members. With the recruitment of current bassist Jopet Estolas and vocalist Marion Funtila, the Lights of 1964 became a funk-rock quartet modeled after the sound of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kapatid. All four current members are studying at De La Salle University-Manila. First performance of the band in its current state was at a blockmate’s debut. It was there were that the new sound debuted and was accepted by the audience members. During the last quarter of 2006, the band played regularly at Mag:net Katipunan on their Campusition nights. It was a learning experience for the band and it was there where the band’s confidence was cemented. The Lights of 1964 has performed at De La Salle University twice: one at the Tunog Berde battle of the bands and at the Greentensity University fair concert. Now, in 2007, the Lights of 1964 plans to continue to perform and give everyone a taste of Pinoy funk.
