Welcome to THE INSPECTORS! First, since many have asked to see Dave's pictures, go to: http://photos.davesartistry.com and, for his own work in progress website: www.davesartistry.com The main man for THE INSPECTORS is Groovus, aka Dave Owen, who, like many musicians now, is a multi-instrumentalist. Groovus is mainly a guitar & bass player/vocalist, but also plays keyboards, drums and any other instrument that will make the song. Groovus has also supplied background music and accompaniment for other musicians and projects. Currently, Dave has been working with a local artist, TOM SMITH, where they have recently released a CD entitled "OLD DOG, NEW TRICKS". The CD contains standard pop songs of Tom Smith's vocal stylings with musical accompaniment, arrrangements, performances and production by Dave Owen. Tom and Dave have been recording for over twenty-five years (but, that doesn't mean that we're old! We started playing when we were infants...) Another person Dave works with is KEITH LISLE, a California based musican and guitar luthier (he recently completed a commissioned custom acoustic guitar for Judge Judy Scheindlin) who works in the TV industry, and also records in his own 32-track studio in Burbank. Dave and Keith have collaborated over the long past in bands and recording projects, and continue to do so where Keith will produce some of the material for Dave's upcoming CD project. JOHN LEE, another member of Dave's musical "posse", has collaborated and recorded with Dave, in particular on one of John's compositions, "The Ballad of Davey O". John is an original "Inspectors" member, going back decades. Watch for some excerpts from Dave's own upcoming CD where his own original tunes and interpretations of other pop/rock songs are showcased!
Band/artist history
Some of the bands that we shared the same bill were: Wild Cherry (Play That Funky Music) Grass Roots (Midnight Confessions, Temptation Eyes, Lovin' Things) Alex Taylor (brother of James Taylor) The Buoys (Timothy) Glass Harp (Phil Keaggy) Steam (Na Na Na Na, Kiss Him Good-bye) Plus, other bands and venues in the forgotten past, such as w/Ron Retzer
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I don't perform presently, but do play and contribute on recording projects with others. I played years ago with many diverse bands and genres (a Chicago-type band called EVERYDAY PEOPLE with horns, a three man heavy group like Cream, 4 and 5 piece groups such as THE MERGER, and "unplugged" type dates). In addition, there is a newer, emerging way of collaborating over the internet.
Your musical influences
Beatles, British Invasion, Beach Boys, CPR, Byrds, Bacharach, Contemporary Christian, Blues, Jazz, but mostly POP - something that appeals. If I like it, that validates it - it could be anything, but I tend to prefer more melodic music.
What equipment do you use?
I use computer based recording, i.e. Cakewalk Sonar DAW; 16 and 24-track hardware based digital audio workstations (DAWs), plus traditional analog tape recorders. I also utilize outboard effects and processing gear with the non-computer recorders. Instrumentally, I use Roland keyboard synthesizers as well as a Roland guitar synthesizer, a Variax modeling guitar, various newer and vintage guitars (6 and 12-strings), and bass guitars. A Roland V-Drum set is used for percussion and I may use other things like a mandolin or a lap steel for specially featured instruments on a song. Lastly, I use the human voice.
Anything else?
Music is meant to be heard and enjoyed and that is why I strive to improve my personal best. Most of my songs are vocal based with lots of harmonies since I love that kind of stuff. I'm not really into dance music, trance or rhythmic based music, but I find that I can sometimes produce those styles more easily than my mainstream tunes. Oh, and one more thing, the songs posted here are original songs, but a lot of songs that have been done are "covers", in fact, most of them. Unfortunately, music sites will not permit covers of tunes to be posted unless they have legal clearances. So, I guess we'll be posting more original songs in the future. Pick up the free CD if you want to hear any of the covers.
