Band/artist history
We (Hiram Lucke and Melissa Rodenbeek) met each other in 1996. We were friends for many years. In 2003, we fell in love. We also started making music together. It was all part of the same thing. We moved into a house together, and built a home studio. There, we completed an EP, the biggest book you'll never read. Right now, we are working on a full-length record called blabber and smoke in tribute to Captain Beefheart. Every song references that song -- lyrically, musically, or both. It was a stray idea that went out of control. Stray ideas are our favorite kinds. By spring, we hope to complete the record.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We would like to play live, as soon as we figure out how two people can make all the sounds we make in home recording in front of other people.
Your musical influences
Captain Beefheart. Yo La Tengo. Bjork. Beach Boys. Ferrante and Teicher. T. Rex. Kinks. Melissa loves Tori Amos and Hiram loves Black Sabbath and we forgive each other. We combine elements of experimental pop, hip hop, electronica -- it's kitchen sink music.
What equipment do you use?
We have a Casio 465, a Roland Juno 6, a Yamaha SHS-10 keytar, a Multivox MX20, a Dr. Sample, a cute little Mattel Synsonics drum machine, a Ludwig snare, bass, and tom, a Fender acoustic guitar, a Washburn bass, a Gibson SG, Fender Bassman, Lil Joe/Kustom cabinet and head (made in Chanute, KS), a melodica, a sax, a trumpet, a clarinet, and some other things that make noise that I'm forgetting. Hiram edits everything, while Melissa admires him from another room, having neither his patience or work ethic.
Anything else?
If you would like a copy of our EP, and want to get on the list for the album, why you really should e-mail us, or send a postcard. We love postcards and anyone interested in our music.
