Christy Howard - Detroit's Country Blues Singer Christy Howard is a singer-songwriter based in Motown. Her country roots, deep in Tennessee , come out when she sings the Blues, giving her a unique sound and a down-to-earth persona. Christy's vocal style is soulful yet mellow, melodic and soothing; unlike the typical growling and wailing blues singer of the Detroit and Chicago bar scenes. Her vocals are unique, yet familiar, and they leave you begging for more. Christy is a country girl who sings the blues. She's part June Carter Cash, and part Memphis Minnie. She is southern attitude meets big city cool.
Band/artist history
Christy Howard (Jones) is originally from Clifton, Tennessee. She is the daughter of a traveling Baptist minister, and she was exposed to country and blues music from an early age as her family moved around from small towns in the southern United States, to the big cities of Chicago and Detroit in the north. A child prodigy, Christy was singing and playing piano by age six, and was performing gospel, country and bluegrass music while still a teenager. She fronted her own country band during her early career in Tennessee and, after relocating in Detroit, subsequently incorporated more Blues material into her repertoire. "If I'm going to really feel it, then I have to sing about things I've experienced directly, or come in close contact with," says Christy, "and I really love to entertain!" The Christy Howard Band includes 2 guitars (Rick Gilbert and Jeff Howard), bass (Frank Greenhalgh) and drums (Bob Lee). The band plays delta- and Chicago-style blues, blues rock, traditional and alternative country and country rock cover tunes, and original compositions in the same musical styles. Christy expects to release her debut CD, called "Party Girl," in Sept. 2006. The Christy Howard Band appears on the recently released "Blues For Katrina" CD (No Cover Productions; Web: www.nocover.com).
