White as a ghost, but blessed with an unearthly talent for rapping, 23 year-old taylormayd (Taylor Murchison) originates from the pineywoods of East Texas. His unique style combines lyrical prowess and sharp delivery with southern-fried and self-produced beats to result in melodic southern hip-hop with global appeal. He has been touted by fans as “the most talented rapper in the South.”
As a youth in the mostly-black neighborhoods of Crockett, TX, taylormayd learned to rap by free-styling with his friends on the city basketball courts. Refining his skill, Taylor filled countless notebooks with verses, choruses, and song ideas and became obsessed with hip-hop music as an art form. As an honor student in high school, Taylor decided that Southern hip-hop lacked intelligent representation: the South needed a rapper who could “keep it real” but also offer new subject matter, better rhymes, and more national marketability.
By his high-school graduation in 1998, taylormayd had become determined to fill a void in contemporary rap music. He had already mastered the basics of recording and beat-production techniques, and he embarked on recording his first songs. His music spread like wildfire among the underground tape-trading communities in Texas.
As the internet became a more popular tool for digital music distribution, taylormayd saw an opportunity to capitalize on its power to reach a huge fanbase. He quickly became a chart-topper on popular internet sites such as MP3.com, and his fan base grew exponentially over the next year as tens of thousands of new fans downloaded his music. Seeing that fans had caught-on to his vision, Taylor decided to record his first album which is set for release in 2004.
I've done shows in Texas and California and look forward to hitting the road in '04.
I have such a huge range of influences it would take three pages to list them all. I feel like every piece of music that I've ever heard has influenced me in someway.
