Tan Tze Hoong
Originally from Subang Jaya, Malaysia, I am currently a student pursuing a B.B.A in the United States.
I serve as the bassist at The Mission, an international college student church at Wichita State University in Kansas. I enjoy playing the guitar. I do prefer playing an acoustic over an electric guitar.
Over the period of eight years writing songs, I have written about more than 70 songs. However, I only manage to remember about 40 or so to be written down in record. Although I enjoy listening, learning and writing different music genres songs, I am primarily interested with writing alternative musics songs.
Band/artist history
I have played the guitar and the bass. I do occasionally play around the drums as much as I can. At the age of 12, I started learning how to play piano. I remember a piano teacher used to come to my house every week for classical piano lesson. Never had I had the intention to switch to other instruments, I started picking up a guitar at the age of 13. I just thought that it would be fun to play other instruments than the piano. I learn to play chords and progressions anywhere, from my neighbors to watching live or broadcasted performances.
At the age of 15, I started getting involved with a band. We played for special occasions and events in school. I then realized that there were many other bands like the one I had. I wanted to be a little more distinct from the rest of the people. That thought led me to start writing songs of my own.
It took me weeks to try to write something. I was never the best in English. One day as I was leaning upon something God has laid in my heart, words started coming out from me. And, I've been writing songs ever since.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I play live all the time, usually in church settings. I don't know if there were any special moments, I get nervous everytime I play and all I ever try to focus on was to get my music and my message across clearly as I possibily can.
Your musical influences
I have a wide range of influences, different artists contributes to different parts of my music. Being a guitarist, I always admired John Mayer and following to him are Jason Mraz, Dave Matthew and so on. I love Dc Talk for their intelligent lyrics, which I try to follow and also Jars of Clay. Generally, my music as people would comment that I play more alternative music.
What equipment do you use?
I have 2 semi-acoustic guitars, a Fender and an Indiana.
Anything else?
My songs speaks of my thoughts through different phases in my life and also the experiences God has brought me through. Often also, I write about something God lays in my heart.
