The abridged history of TANGENTS
Well here goes the "short version" of our story... It all began a long time ago in galaxy far,far away... (Oops, sorry, I was watchin' Star Wars last night )
In early 1998, Lamar Mauldin was asked to do a spot in a benefit show by a friend of his. The idea was for Lamar to play his guitar and harmonica on a couple of songs between sets. Lamar decided to call up a couple of buddies and add a little more to his show so he called Troy Shadley and Wesley Short in to play rhythm while he sang and played his harmonica. Then he decided to let Troy sing after he heard him play a Bad Company song called feel like making love. At this point, Troy and Wesley told Lamar that they knew a couple of guys who might add to the mix. Lamar told them to set it up. So at the next practice they added Johnny Wilson on drums and Tony Wheeler on lead guitar. Lamar decided to call this project The Lamar Mauldin Experience. (Good thing we changed it, can you imagine the "per letter" cost for screen printing T shirts... Jeez.) Well, they played the show with six songs and got a pretty good response for only having practiced a couple of weeks. It was decided to continue on as a band. If they'd only known... After practicing a few more weeks, Tony got them a gig at Allen's cause his uncle knew the owner. The band played a couple of shows at Allen's and got paid which they all thought was pretty cool. (Ok, so they made 10 bucks apiece, but hey it all spends the same...) After a couple of shows, the guys were at a practice session and being very unorganized as usual so during a cigarette break Lamar told them they were all going off on a TANGENT. BAM! The name stuck. They started playing at more places like American Legions and parties. About this time (Probably 2001) a guy by the name of Tim Parks decided to give this fledgling band called TANGENTS a shot at his club in Winder. They became a regular act after a couple of shows. After a couple of years of playing at Cadillac's and American legions, the band went through lineup changes for a couple of months... Finally they got the right lineup in place with Danny, Robert and Jeff added to the mix they went into the studio and recorded a new demo and got back out into the club circuit. Well, that's the abridged version, and it's been crazy ever since. More to come... The band.
Yes. We play live every weekend. We play at Nashville Station in Macon, Ga.; Stallions in the Country in Rutledge, Ga. ; GoodFellas in Commerce, Ga. ; Glenda's Bar and Grill in Walnut Grove, Ga. ; Hank and Jerry's in Conyers, Ga. ; The RockStar Saloon in Alpharetta, etc... The list seems endless. We are truly blessed to be able to do this in so many places. There are special moments at all of our gigs. RockStock 2003 was a special moment for us.
We're more into guitar driven Southern Rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd. But we also love country, Travis Tritt is a personal hero of mine. We love it all. But our original stuff is a mix between John Mellencamp/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Bad Company/CCR I think.
Fender, Gibson, Peavey, Ovation, Pearle, heck we use it all.
We love to entertain people, that's our job. And our families are really supportive and we're lucky for that. But we guarantee you, if you'll come to one show, you'll come to another. You will never not have a good time at Tangents show. Check out our website at www.tangentsband.com for our schedule.
