The famous SW Florida pirate Hose Gaspar encamped his men on Sanibel Island, and kept women captives on Captiva Island until he received ransom. Josefa was a young Mexican girl whom Gaspar loved and swept her away to his personal island.
Later the island was named Ussepa...because when she didn't return his love, in a fit of rage, he lopped off her head. To this day, the ghost of Josefa roams in search of lost paradise.
