The Way it Should Be The Way it Should Be

A country as strong as the US and still there is so much hate... so much poverty... So much need. It's beautiful that we do so much for others in distant lands but sometimes we do it at the expense of our own. That just ain't the way it should be.

What happens when you mix a little Al Jarreau, Marvin Gaye and Terrence Trent D'Arby with John the Baptist and the Psalmist, David? You get Soul'd Out! ... "Soul" for short. He's true to his name and bringin' it on his debut project "Soulitude" released in December of 2002. This project represents nearly 20 years of being "ahead of his time" musically as far as the genres in Christian Music would allow. But that's all changed now thanks to pioneers in the industry from Andre Crouch to Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin and more recently "Nureau" Tonex (he says that this new genra represents music that previously had no place in Christian music stores so a "new row" had to be created). What was once considered too worldly or not "Christian" enough is being accepted by a large audience. Soul, the oldest of five children was born to sing and entertain. From the days of performing for the adults at family gatherings for spare change and harmonizing with his siblings, to a lifetime of singing in gospel choirs, to leading soulful worship in his church, Canaan Christian Fellowship where his father pastors, Soul has always had a vision that he would one day sing before kings to minister the goodness of the Lord. An evangelist with fire in his heart, his pen could be considered a flame thrower. His lyrics seem to come straight from the heart of God. Soul believes in bringing the message to the world in a culturally relevant way. "My desire is to be like Jesus and 'touch the lepers' of today (the bangers, the abandonned, the cultural intellects, even the carnal Christian that has temporarily lost site of the way). God has not called me to merely pray them out of a situation, He's called me to go to them and love them" says Soul.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Currently the praise and worship leader at my father's church, Canaan Christian Fellowship in Shawnee Kansas, I always have an opportunity to express the love of God through song. i am constantly inspired to write new songs that I feel are coming "hot off the press" so to speak. I also get an opportunity to minister at churshes and various functions throughout the city. At the end of 2002 I was able to bless an audience that attended the Grand opening of His House (www.hizhop.com) where local rap artist 5:11 and national Christian rap artist KJ-52 also ministered. It was a blessed time. I feel that as much, if not more than doing recording, Live ministry is what I am called to.
Your musical influences
Production wise I have merely touched the tip of the tip of the iceburg. Quincy Jones, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are at the top. In the Christian market, Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin and Tonex are right up there. I want to be THE best producer/arranger in my genre. Musically, I am inspired by the lyrical genius of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. I've been told that I remind people of Al Jarreau, Terrence Trent D'Arby and Teddy Pendergrass or Gerald Lavert... I think I sound like Soul.
What equipment do you use?
What ever keys I can find and a Boss BR1180CD... and any handy mic. The songs on the "soulitude" Cd were done with a borrowed SM58.
Anything else?
DEFINITION: soulitude - (n) The absolute state of realization that regardless of attitude or positive thinking, the spiritual condition of your heart is what really matters; a constant truth in any given situation; that place that leaves just you and God... even in a crowded room.
