Band/artist history
Sickle Project is an exciting collaboration of two NYC based producers: Small & Upson. It is a blend of live and electronic music melded by an undeniable rhythm. The sound mixes elements of groove-infused jazz, electronic ambience, hip hop, funk, ethnic flavors and dub influenced break-beat styles. The urban and ethnic diversity of the city can be heard in the groups compositions and grooves. Adam Small is a young bassist/writer/producer who has performed with Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic), Eddie Henderson (solo, Herbie Hancock), Larry Goldings (solo, Maceo Parker), Jimmy Smith, Bernard Purdie, amongst others. He has toured extensively throughout Europe and the U.S. in a variety of styles including (jazz, blues, r&b, funk, rock, world, electronica, etc.). His diversity and knowledge of computer music has kept him busy in a variety of circles. You can hear Adams memorable bass grooves throughout this album. Check out his tune Bilby (track 1) for an example of his flowing style. Upson is a Brooklyn based woodwind player/writer-arranger/producer who is cutting up the modern New York music scene. His main weapons are the saxophone and flute (which can be heard on this album). However his skills as an arranger and composer are in high demand. He has performed with the likes of Lonnie Smith, Gary Bartz, Jeff Tain Watts, and Jimmy Ponder. Upson has toured continental Europe and has recently returned from a trip to Morocco (Tangiers and Fes), where he played with some of the finest Gwana musicians (ala Randy Weston). He also has led a 10 piece afrobeat orchestra, which can be heard on the K-Pasta Record label (www.kpasta.com). These influences have led to compositions such as Red Hook Dub with its unique horn arrangements and ambient vibe.
