Band/artist history
Shore Leave was founded in may 2003 when singer-songwriter Merijn Landuyt contacted violinplayer and technician Mathijs Bertel for the recording of a first demo (at that time under the name of bartender). In november 2003 Jan Dhaene joined in as second guitar- and bassplayer. Drummer and Percussionist Koen Degand completed the bands line-up in april 2005. Shore Leaves primary musical influences are honest singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt and many others. Since the recording of the second demo (in february 2004) however, the accent has somewhat shifted. Today the band does more than mere storytelling. It explores the possibilities of a simple accoustic line-up. The players continuously investigate the various ways in which 3 stringed instruments and voices relate to one another, how they interact and complete each other and finally how wide a range of sound can be achieved. This results in a refreshing perception of harmony and a recognizable, authentic sound, but without playing down the singer-songwriting-roots, as can be heard on the newest EP See the Moon Spells High Tide and the Bumfire s Burning (recorded in march 2005). A percussionist joining the band was a logical evolution at this stage, adding an extra dimension to the whole. The small and simple line-up makes it possible for Shore Leave to play almost everywhere. the band gained a certain live-reputation in and around Kortrijk, where some of the band members spent their youth. other concerts took place on the artsfestival Bolwerk in Deerlijk, in club De Kreun in Bissegem, in the Kinky Star club and on the museumproject Amuséevous in het Huis van Alijn in Gent.
