Band/artist history
SCARED Little BOY Every once in a while a band comes along with something different in mind. Generally these bands come out of areas where they are least suspected. Des Moines , Iowa is an example. Peoria , Illinois is another example, as is Bakersfield , California and Aberdeen , Washington . This story, however, starts in the small Pacific Northwest town of Toledo , Washington. Scared Little Boy has its roots planted firmly in Toledo , WA . Yeah, me, Nate, Derek and Ryan all went to school there for several years. It's a horrible town, says Zach, lead vocals. It's like one of those towns you hear about where all there is to do is cause trouble, go to church, or get into music. Pick two. Fortunately, these guys chose music to put their hearts into. Not that Toledo is a hub of artistic and musical expression. In fact, the truth is quite to the contrary. Toledo has maybe one thousand people tops. The high school had three hundred kids. It's a conservative wasteland, says Ryan, guitars. Despite the members' universal dislike for the town, they will acknowledge that they got their first taste of music there. The band first started under the name Apex in 1999 when Nate, Derek, and a high school friend decided to start jamming together in high school, just for the sake of having fun. None of the members had any previous band experience, and Nate picked up the bass to fill a necessity. I was in it for the chicks at first! says Derek. After our first practice,' I realized that music was all I ever wanted. And that's all it has been about since. Zach came into the group a short while later, after showing a propensity for growling like some popular bands of the time. It was kind of lame, but I could do it, says Zach, referring to the growl sounds. Nate thought it was the coolest thing, at the time the whole group thing was kind of lame actually, but it was our first real taste of playing our own music, and I loved it. After about a year of practicing in the back of a trailer, the band decided they needed to start trying to be serious. After losing their original guitarist, they picked up Ryan, who originally joined to play drums as he had in his previous band, Split Decision. Ryan eventually switched to the guitar and showed a natural talent for it. The band members loved it. Switch was a good drummer, but he's an excellent guitarist, gushes Zach. He plays from his heart, and it's not what everyone else is doing, says guitarist Karl. By 2001, the group consisted of Nate, Zach, Ryan, and Derek. They finally had a solid group and began writing songs together, some of which they are still playing. After several months of just writing, the band sat down together and picked up the now well known name Scared Little Boy. They played a few shows together, and gained a small fanbase around Lewis County , but nothing big had become of their enormous aspirations. A few internal struggles dropped the band into stagnation, but they came roaring back into the small Lewis County scene in mid-2003, refreshed and fully replenished. After we had started playing all these shows, Ryan decided he wanted us to pick up a new guitarist, so he could have some freedom to play these other ideas he had for our newer song catalogue, says Zach. Ryan brought in Clint Staapline Mullins, who he met at a local music store, to try out. I told them that even if I wasn't in their band I'd always support their music. I loved it, Staapline says. Clint wanted to attempt to fill the second guitarist slot, but he knew someone who'd be suited to fill the slot. From day one, he had been telling me about Karl, Zach says. And when he finally brought Karl in, I think everyone's jaw hit the floor. Karl is a phenomenal axe-master, says Derek. I think we all instantly bonded, musically and as friends. The band was in a pickle with this new situation; should they keep Clint as guitarist two and not have Karl involved at all, or should they have Karl as guitarist and drop Clint? Neither choice was preferable. Eventually the idea came up to have two bassists and two guitarists, with Clint filling the other bass spot. That way, we'd have a slap/lead bass and a rhythm bass, says Ryan. It was a crazy idea, but SLB makes it work, in only the way they could. But Clint later left due to reasons unknown. Now we're a full unit. We're complete. I could never have it any other way. I love what we're doing, and I think that a lot of other people will too, says Zach.
