The fetid seeds of what was to become Sardonicus were cast upon the burned and
bloodied soil of rural Nebraska a decade ago during what was arguably the pinnacle of
death metal, thrash and grindcore’s prosperity in the early 90’s. What started as a regular
jam session between a pair of friends, Scott and Jamie, designated as Flyswatter and
influenced by bands such as Entombed, Pestilence, MOD, SOD, Metallica, Dismembered,
DRI, and Nuclear Assualt became a full fledged metallic force once augmented by a
bassist and a vocalist. These four young men with a wicked penchant for all things heavy
requisitioned an old horse stable, gutted it like a fish, and converted it into their own rat’s
nest in which to incubate and propagate their viciously aggressive sonic spawn. Originally
christened as Decomposed, they later shortened said appellation to simply Ded, a concise
and foreboding nomen if there ever was one, much like their music at the time. Compact
and caustic blasts of death infused grind were the order of the dark day; zombie holocausts,
suicides, torture, and other themes of untimely human demise permeated the band’s
compositions. Adding influences from Slayer, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Carcass, and
Cannibal Corpse to name a few, the fearsome foursome of Jamie Steffen on drums, Dan
Hanes on bass, Scott Kyle on guitar, and Ian Dawson on vocals honed their vile concoction
while letting it seep into the underground via numerous rehearsal and demo tapes that still
circulate to this day, and decimating local stages with the like-minded hordes in Divine
Chaos and Desecration among others. As nations were preparing their terms of surrender
under the looming shadow of the mighty Ded, disaster struck swiftly and silently like the
reaper’s scythe... Dan and Ian had left, Ian to Connecticut and Dan...no one associated with
the band is currently aware of Dan’s whereabouts. He is presumed alive and officially
classified MIA.
While it seemed that Ded were exactly that, our remaining villains bided their time
jamming sporadically and serving time in other outfits such as Lowball while their nefarious
creations hibernated amidst the catacombs of metallic would-be legends, lying in wait for
their day of reckoning, their day of resurrection, their day to reclaim past glories...
A new millennium dawns, and with it comes fresh blood to the ranks; the resurrection
begins. Bassist Charles "Chip" Frieden joins the band, they begin utilizing drop tuning and
a new stage in song and riff writing evolution begins. Shortly thereafter, vocalist Selvmord
(a.k.a. Satan) emerges from the shadows to lend his violently versatile vocals to
the sound. The sardonic songwriting begins to veer more towards non-repeating song
structures with brutal and blackened riffage. Selvmord’s intense dedication to the aesthetics
of brutal death metal and raw black metal increasingly influence the direction of Sardonicus’
development, while his background, philosophies and belief structure paint an extremely
grim and violent lyrical picture with which to augment the instrumental onslaught. In May
of 2004, the final addition to this burnt and bloody collage falls into place with the
recruitment of a second guitarist, Scott Pearson. Besides adding additional girth to an
already hefty sound , Scott brings to the fold a unique sense of tech metal influenced rhythm,
a heavy interest in odd time signatures, and a simple yet interesting and effective
perspective on harmony and melody. The addition of a second guitarist opened yet more
avenues of musical exploration by freeing up original guitarist, Scott Kyle, to explore more
lead and melody based ideas while the second "flying Scotsman", Pearson, holds down the
rhythm guitar parts, shadows with a harmony line, or occasionally takes a lead of his own...
the sardonic sound mutates again. Most recently, Cody Trisdale replaced Chip on the bass
guitar to provide the rumbling storm cloud that forms the ominous sonic backdrop to what
