The Psycho-Kat was the name given by Tracey Pagey to her solo music for kRkRkRk between mid 1994 & late 1996 - although the project has never been officially laid to rest. Tracey's solo work followed her involvement with the bizarre & playful pop-cabaret 4-piece Spastic Crunch between late 1993 & mid 1994. This group also featured kRkRkRk co-founder J-mz Robinson, David Rainer & Rangi Powick (later to play with the totally different death metal trio Chapel Of Gristle). Spastic Crunch followed on from some early collaborative work between Tracey & J-mz & even a guest spot with TMA-1 for a performance in mid 1993. This performance, entitled Kabaret, was held at the Free Theatre, Rolleston Ave & also featured David Khan & Jason Tamihana-Bryce doing noise-poetry not to mention Dunedin luminaries Peter Jefferies & Sandra Bell. With TMA-1 & Spastic Crunch Tracey only utilised her talents as a vocalist & lyricist. The Psycho-Kat project was an entirely different kettle of fish. Although (like most of kRkRkRk's core personnel) Tracey had no formal musical training, she picked up whatever guitars, keyboards, drum machines & sundry bits of metal she could get her hands on & immediately began to produce some of the label's classic early music. Metal percussion & distorted synth drones (either J-mz's Roland Juno 60 or David's Akai AX60) were combined with dramatic, dirge guitar in a manner reminiscent of early Einsturzende Neubauten. Amidst all this industrial noise & chaos, however, were far more subtle compositions which used layered, ethereal vocals, wind instruments & understated loops (created on tape or with the assistance of sampler/delay pedals) to create an altogether more meditative & ritualistic feel. It was about the time Tracey began the Psycho-Kat project that she completed an arts degree in Religious Studies. During the first half of 1994 Tracey released a cassette album, 44 Drunken Nites KRK008, & toured to Dunedin with, among others, Palmerston North trio Meat Market. The live incarnation of the Psycho-Kat also featured, at various times, Reta LeQuesne (Axel Grinders, Snort), Justin Schilder (later of Chicane) & Sarah Nichol (TMA-1's live sound person). The final Psycho-Kat performance took place in September 1994 on the occasion of kRkRkRk's first dedicated label event, A Tepid Interference Cluster. This took place at the shortlived Interzone venue on Lichfield St. The event was masterminded by kRkRkRk co-founder Peter Wright & also featured the debut performance (as a 2-piece: Peter & David) of leonard Nimoy. Tracey subsequently joined this group in the following month. The Psycho-Kat project was largely discontinued at that time - although Tracey continued to record pieces for various kRkRkRk compilation tapes.
