In 2008, Donald W. Mohr collected some of Austin's finest to form a free jazz ensemble for live playing. Austin, having a primarily straight-jazz scene had seen similar acts in the past but they were few and far between. Difficult to find the appropriate venue, Nuclear Powered Winnebago ultimately never found a niche in Austin.Band/artist history
I got turned on to free playing at Berklee, sitting in on Mitch Hauper's course. This was my attempt to bring some people together in a town far away from Boston and basically do the same thing live, perhaps with a slightly more commercial appeal.Have you performed in front of an audience? We no longer play live but I am releasing some of the live recordings as I clean them up in my mastering studio. I loved playing with the band but organizing sometimes 7 people was a real challenge and the kind of gigs we were playing just didn't pay. The best was our debut performance where we played a tiny festival, going on after an electronic band similar to Daft Punk and proceeded to open many people to the concept of free jazz. At first, they didn't understand what we were attempting to achieve but we were very well received by the end.
Your musical influences
For this group, it's pretty simple actually. I was basically blending Mahavishnu Orchestra, the late 60s Miles stuff, Ornette Coleman, Steve Reich and Explosions in the Sky. At least that's where I was coming from. The rest of the band had various backgrounds from Bebop to country drumming. What equipment do you use?
Basically, it just comes down to who I'm playing with and their gear. I usually bring some tiny, tiny amp. Like a 10 watt Tech 21 or 8 Watt tube amp. If it's somewhere without a PA, I'll bring a little 100 watt fender solid state. I was taught a long time ago that the sound doesn't come from the gear but from the hands. I play either a Dano 63, a 1969 Silvertone 1457 or a 99 American Fat Strat. I use a pair of looper pedals (to create out of sync loops), a transistor radio, brass slide, various mutes, mallets, other things to prepare the guitar and a Boss ME-50 pedal.Anything else?
The records will be free. Please just enjoy them. If enough people are down, I may get the band back together.
I'm going to be releasing 2 live EPs (one might as well be an LP) and one LP, 10,000 MPG. Right now, it's 2 CDs, either I'm going to cut some tunes or edit it down heavily.
